My Desert Island Piano VST - VI Labs Modern D

pianow

Pete14 yesterday, according to Pianow & friends, there was nothing better under the sun than VSL, yet along comes Modern D……….

i made a discussion a few weeks ago about how perfect modern u is, i said it's the best virtual piano on the market,
I love vsl stuff but they're not the number one when it comes to having all the necessary features and i said that as well

maybe you should stop being you for a single day, don't you think?

OlivierW

you said one negative thing about modern d resonances, and our residents troll is going to punish you for it

David Lai

Well, after the dust has settled a bit on this new release, I do have to say a huge thank you to VI Labs again, especially for bearing with many things from me regarding how Modern D functions. Now I can say with certainty that I've found my go-to piano VST, and others can take a second spot to it. At least before the next best thing decides to come out and wow me. But after this one, it's hard to be wowed again, only can be matched, but hard to beat.

David Lai

pianow Haha, yeah, he wants to hang on by a thread when it comes to PianoTeq, I understand that.

But seriously, the resonances on Modern D is already working very well. What Oliver said about sympathetic resonances does exist, as I just tested. But I imagine it's just a scripting thing, and can be changed when they decide to update the UFS for the piano.

David Lai

maybe it is, but i can safely say that I don't care about such small thing, especially when there's no "better" option

David Lai

pianow You're giving it a lot of grace. But yes, I could reproduce what Oliver said, and I'll reach out to VI Labs to talk about it in the next few days. This, I'm sure, can be changed.

In short, here are steps to reproduce it:

1. Hold down a few keys silently (a C major triad in the lowest octave as an example);

2. Play another C major triad, then release;

3. Play the same C major triad with pedal down, then release the sustain pedal. The previously triggered sympathetic resonance is also gone.

I believe it's a scripting problem that can be solved.

David Lai

OlivierW Great mic mixing! You've put the piano in the center of the stage. Bravo!!!

David Lai

OlivierW Thanks! How did you do that? I'd love to put the piano in the center too.

OlivierW

David Lai it's a mix of Cybergene presets and mine, when i upload it here, its corruptes in .txt

pianow

David Lai

i trust that you can convince them to do so David, but as far as i know, there is nothing comparable to the modern d

David Lai

OlivierW Thanks for sharing, let me do some homework. 🙂

CyberGene

OlivierW you may have to zip it first since the forum has protection against unknown extensions. I will see how to fix that but until then, use zip.

OlivierW

ok here the preset :

David Lai

OlivierW Thanks, I'll load it in and have a look!

pianow how perfect modern u is

After a pianoless week I just played again for about half an hour. Modern U of course.

And it just sings so beautifully… plays so accurately… It is a true joy.

I've said it multiple times: without Modern U, I probably (well, highly likely) would have given up digital piano as a feasible instrument already several years ago.

Cheers, and the happiest playing,

HZ

Maybe this is related and can be relayed to @VILabs as well (and solved, I would love that):

In Modern U, also related to pedaling, sometimes releases aren't played. Modern U's releases are utterly succulent and so this is a pity. I'm not at the piano but try(!) to describe it:

  • Playing notes without pedal, and letting go of the key(s): nice release.
  • Playing notes with pedal, letting go of the key(s) but holding the pedal, then releasing the pedal: no releases, sound ends abruptly.

I notice this the most in the bass and tenor region, perhaps because releases are most pronounced there.

I would be curious to find whether this behavior in Modern U is related scripting-wise to these resonance findings, also pedal related, in Modern D.

Anyway, Cheers!

HZ

PS Now that I think of it, in your Chopin demo, there are some busy passages in which at a few moments there also are some very abrupt endings to the sound which to me sound odd (and unpleasant). This made me think of the release experience I have with Modern U as described above. The scripts for U and D undoubtedly share a lot of code so who knows, is some or all of this indeed related. Cheers again!
