My Desert Island Piano VST - VI Labs Modern D

David Lai

Pete14 this enthusiasm will continue. We’ve even got Olivier on! Over behavior and beauty, I would always choose beauty. You don’t have to preach to me, I won’t be converted by you. And I hope this tsunami will eventually win over you.

David Lai

dore_m thank you! I didn’t know it was so easy to make a video like this. The text and interface was added by VI Labs, not me.

dore_m

@David Lai now for voiceovers and video at the same time.... Then two camera angles.

David Lai

dore_m I’ll slowly make progress in that department, Dore.

CyberGene

Pete14 do I sense some nervousness because people are hyped about something else than Pianoteq after the relative silence from sample-based companies? 😃 You thought samples were over, PT is almost there, “just wait for the next version, it will finally sound like a piano”™ and out of a sudden there’s a new sampled piano that’s even better than previous sampled pianos. I can feel the pain and the sour taste. But don’t worry, PT will certainly sound like a piano in the next major version! 🙏🏻

David Lai

CyberGene are you among the Pianoteq group as well? You are missing a lot! That synth still has ways to go.

Ohh, no, no, no 🤣 I’m one of the most well-known PT critics! Some PT aficionados hate me so much, every time I post something critical about PT, they would anonymously trash my piano videos on YouTube. It was a tongue in cheek comment with Pete 😉

CyberGene Ah, cool, haha. Good to know, thank you! 🙂

pianow

Pete14 yesterday, according to Pianow & friends, there was nothing better under the sun than VSL, yet along comes Modern D……….

i made a discussion a few weeks ago about how perfect modern u is, i said it's the best virtual piano on the market,
I love vsl stuff but they're not the number one when it comes to having all the necessary features and i said that as well

maybe you should stop being you for a single day, don't you think?

pianow

OlivierW

you said one negative thing about modern d resonances, and our residents troll is going to punish you for it

David Lai

Well, after the dust has settled a bit on this new release, I do have to say a huge thank you to VI Labs again, especially for bearing with many things from me regarding how Modern D functions. Now I can say with certainty that I've found my go-to piano VST, and others can take a second spot to it. At least before the next best thing decides to come out and wow me. But after this one, it's hard to be wowed again, only can be matched, but hard to beat.

David Lai

pianow Haha, yeah, he wants to hang on by a thread when it comes to PianoTeq, I understand that.

But seriously, the resonances on Modern D is already working very well. What Oliver said about sympathetic resonances does exist, as I just tested. But I imagine it's just a scripting thing, and can be changed when they decide to update the UFS for the piano.

pianow

David Lai

maybe it is, but i can safely say that I don't care about such small thing, especially when there's no "better" option

David Lai

pianow You're giving it a lot of grace. But yes, I could reproduce what Oliver said, and I'll reach out to VI Labs to talk about it in the next few days. This, I'm sure, can be changed.

In short, here are steps to reproduce it:

1. Hold down a few keys silently (a C major triad in the lowest octave as an example);

2. Play another C major triad, then release;

3. Play the same C major triad with pedal down, then release the sustain pedal. The previously triggered sympathetic resonance is also gone.

I believe it's a scripting problem that can be solved.

David Lai

OlivierW Great mic mixing! You've put the piano in the center of the stage. Bravo!!!

David Lai

OlivierW Thanks! How did you do that? I'd love to put the piano in the center too.
