Impressive photos! Congrats... And the cabinet has enough height to put a number of speakers inside, resonating through the wooden cabinet.

You know, delvento, we haven’t looked eye to eye for a while; especially since you decided to ‘sensor’ me, and as we all know, nobody sensors Pete!

I must admit that my engineering talents do not go farther than building a tiny Lego house, and that you lost me at “sensor A or B”; however, those pictures of your home-made hybrid are truly impressive, and, dare I speculate, I think the end-and-very-playable result will be outstanding regardless of whether you go with sensor A, B, or even C!

Perhaps what I’m trying to say is…..congratulations!

Kudos to CG for inspiring others to take a GO at it, and I hope that someday one of y’all will be our David to Yamaha’s Goliath.

Drum rolls…..

My Cybrid is livingroom worthy! I think we had this conversation with @arc or perhaps @vagfilm about having a whole mess of a DIY project in my house, which led to some odd priority of making the outside of the instrument before the inside was ready. That means I can work on it in the comfort of my home, rather than in the cold garage (where I basically could not do anything in winter). In fact I "vacated" the garage for other family possessions being stored for the winter (so it's as full as it can be).

Enough tittle-tattle, here you go!

I made my DIY grand hybrid an upright-looking, somewhat spinet-like, but a little bit chubby. Some of that was on purpose, some was forced by what I have (grand cabinet parts). I really like the result, in my opinion is better than the tiny-grand look of the Yamaha N1 and the Kawai NV10.

If you think you don't like it, don't despair. A strategically placed door 🤣 makes it look less chubby

Now, let's not forget the pedals. Having the original lyre and pedals refinished took much less than I thought, but reattaching it back where it was was much longer and complicated than planned, culprit of a missing part. In any case, I did solve the problems, and the pedals work great

Well, the sostenuto does (which has a dummy levarage). Una corda does shift the keyboard correctly, but I am still missing the shifting springs, so the keyboard does not go back (yet 😊) and the not-original back action is still being built (remember the garage?) so the sustain hasn't anything to sustain (yet 😊)

I really like how the professional enamel finish ended up being. Very close to classic "ebony polish" look: shiny and smooth. Even though there are some small flaws which I will fix with another application when weather permit (temperature has to be above 70F for at least 24 hours, better if 48, ideally a week -- and we are going around freezing most of the times). Take a close look:

Even with the flaws, I think it's more than acceptable! So let's switch now to a "player perspective", and I mean look, not sound 🤣

Wait what's there under the lid? There's a missing piece, let's take a closer look

Yeah, you got me, two missing pieces:

  1. the back of the piano, which I omitted only because I want to make my life easier until I finish action work and electronic assembly
  2. that part that usually "hangs down" from the lid to covers that hole; it's missing because I need to cut it to size to allow room for some controls (probably just the amplifier). That part will also makes the fly (technical name for this part of the lid of an acoustic grand) much more rigid avoiding the bend that you can see in the full picture (where is exaggerated because of perspective), because of the screen weight

The advantage is that you can peek inside 😆 but if you are not satisfied enough, I'll open the fly/lid for you

I really like these aluminum extrusions, and notice how I can easily adjust the height of the bar, something that would ease regulation, particularly hammer blow distance. Speaking of blows, here is one

Wow, looks so nice! I actually love the look of older grands, old furniture, old houses (in Europe) and the old aesthetics as a whole with all the elaborate creases and details. At least to my taste that beats the N1X and NV10 and I would absolutely prefer such a vintage look compared to the modern shiny black polish with the almost rectangular shapes.

You’ll have to think of dampening the stop rail since it almost sounds like a muffled piano tone in itself 🤣

Yes I know that. In fact when I "played" that note I thought for a second: wow, I got that single note where I installed the sensor? But no, the computer (and sound system) was not connected, so it could not have been, it was just the aluminum extrusion vibrating.

Notice however that such a thing is not a stop rail. That is a sensor support rail. The stop rail will be plastic, probably 3D printed in sections and potentially covered with felt. That plastic will have holes for the sensors to "see" the hammers approaching (hence the small EAITRCA6 or QRE1113 are better fit for this design than the CNY70). But I'm getting ahead of myself, this part is a story for another day 🤫

What a labor of love. Color me (very) impressed! I agree with CyberGene, it looks better in some respects than the modern Yamaha and Kawai hybrids. Is that an old iMac with the score on top? Will you use that to play the VSTs? And will you build speakers into that cabinet (and take advantage of that old wood resonance) or have them sit on top?

Again, congrats: you should be very proud (and even prouder when the electronics are in as well)!

Yes, mid-2007 era 😮️! Running Linux (hence the Apple logo has been covered). Too slow for Mac OS now, fine with Linux. I have a Bluetooth mouse-and-keyboard app in my phone, so no clutter around 😎

Perhaps. Have to see how it performs. Might be too slow (even with the extra memory and disk which were installed in its middle age). Hope it does well because I don't want to spend money for something else (and having a monitor for a hidden desktop will increase the number of cables, as I am discussing at https://pianoclack.com/forum/d/280-cable-management/12 ) -- course I could buy another all-in-one… but I'd rather squeeze everything from what I have first

The plan is DMLs in the bottom as hinted at https://pianoclack.com/forum/d/200-upright-piano-speaker-simulator-addon-idea and partially visible in these pictures. Just because I can, I will probably try to use the cabinet with the same exciters, but I don't expect it to be anything worth it. If DMLs alone turn out unsatisfactory, I'll investigate other options. Inside the cabinet there isn't much room, because the action and the electronics take almost all of it. In the bottom (where I plan to add more DMLs and make it look a bit "close" like an upright) I could place some short floorstanding speakers. We'll see.

Ah! You got me. I meant to click on that link (and indeed it would have reminded me of your interest in the transducers and flat speakers), but I must have had a "senior moment" and after watching the video, I… ummm…. forgot! 😅

ETA: And thanks for the other answers. If you go the Pianoteq route (perhaps you don't like it, I can't recall right now who does and who does not, except for Mac3 who has been very clear on the subject, lol), perhaps you could mount the Raspberry Pi module inside the cabinet, and control it remotely via iPhone or iPad with VNC?

Wow, what a beauty!

I’m sorry, but neither the N1X nor the NV-10 look this classy and elegant.

The N1X wants to be a box and a circle at the same time; the NV-10 has nice curves, but somehow seems a little over-done. Delvento’s hybrid is just the right amount of everything!

P.S.

I forgot to mention the Petrof ‘MIDI piano’; I’ve always liked that design, also very classy, but Petrof never brought that piano back. I’m hoping they release a new version (with speakers); and honestly, I’m surprised they haven’t done so yet; considering the appeal of hybrids.

RIP you basically do nothing, perhaps get a table or something of suitable size, sturdiness and height. @CyberGene could comment on this since it's his route. Perhaps Jay can too, since that's his choice also

My long-term plan is actually your #3. I expect I'll end up with an enclosure that looks like a slightly more functional version of the VPC1, whenever I make it there, in the distant future. Until then, it just lives in my office, where nobody else gets a vote on aesthetics. 🙂

I've got my action mounted onto a frame made of 40x40 and 40x80 extrusions, held together with a number of hefty bolts. That basically acts as the key bed, and I believe it is rigid enough I can do anything I want underneath of it, and the action should be unaffected.

RIP but at least you should remove the plate/harp. Don't do it yourself

I saw your video doing it. You used quite a few nice tricks, including the car (!) which I doubt anyone else (especially folks in Europe) would use for this purpose. Do you still have the grand cabinet? If so, I'll be happy to help you making it become something like mine (if you change your mind about your choice)

Thanks guys. In fact I like a lot how it turned out, and I hope to inspire, like @CyberGene did for the electronics, other people on what is possible with minimal woodworking, especially considering how it was starting (first pictures I posted in this thread) which is probably the worse than anybody would face.

I do, I kept all of the pieces, through the harp was drug off to one of my parents' barns. I believe they plan to clean it up, clear coat it for rust resistance, and prop it up on display on their property.

Having no speakers inside this cabinet would be a missed opportunity. And once you have them, please record the whole thing, even if it's just with a phone.

If VST samples turn out unusable in a cabinet setup - these aren't intended to be used in such a way, so don't blame VST flaws on your speaker setup - there is still the option to go with a traditional DP MIDI extender: Dexibell has them.

If by "cabinet" you mean the actual "enclosure", that volume is already 80% + filled with the action and once I have all the electronics, cabling, sensors, and rails to hold them, it will be close to 95% filled (don't have the specs on all of that). So what you call "missed opportunity" is either impossible or a "missed opportunity to place really tiny speakers in the only location available which may be acoustically inappropriate". Perhaps it won't be that bad with tweeters, but I assume you are talking of midrange and woofers instead.

On the other hand, if by "cabinet" you mean the "bottom", as you can see from the pictures and video, there is no "enclosure". I could make one on each side (leaving an empty part in the middle for the pedals) but that will be practically equivalent of building a pair of floorstanding speakers of a size which fits that location, and logistically that is much better (ease of construction, ease of installing, ease of move). So I might do that if the DML turn out disappointing, which they might given that their dimensions are also forced by the location of their installation -- and preliminary tests are not so good as with the 2'x2' square piece.

That is interesting, years ago I was looking for something like that and I was unable to find anything like that, besides a few cheap ones on Amazon with no reviews.

For the time being, I think I will give PTQ a good shot, since it's supposed to be designed mostly to be played live, and in the tests which we run at https://pianoclack.com/forum/d/290-virtual-piano-comparison I actually liked it best than many others. If that is disappointing, I might give Garritan a try too. Only failing these options, I would consider the device which you suggest, which is good to know is an option, but a bit steep in price (compared to using some computer hardware I have, obviously if one has to budget a new computer, then the vivo is inexpensive).

Full-range speakers might suit piano more than tweeters and woofers. But yes, you have actual cabinet suitable of properly projecting acoustic piano sound and completely filling that up with electronics is what I see as "missed opportunity".

The VIVO pricing is pretty appropriate for a hybrid piano build - you don't fire that with a Casio engine. It won't work out of the box in such a setup either, don't underestimate the audio skills required to build an actually well-sounding digital piano. However unlike Garritan CFX only providing various pre-mixed microphone positions, which are completely useless for cabinet use, Pianoteq Standard might give you enough settings to generate an appropriate audio input for a DIY cabinet amplification. Standard DP tone generators do too, though they might not expose all the processing settings to the end-user.
