Modern D vs Pianoteq vs The People

David Lai

David B thank you, David! I’m still learning the English language. I feel it’s fascinating, especially when you tap into the people and culture of, in this case, the US where I’m now located. So every day when I’m here, I learned something new about the people in the language they speak, and I incorporate some of what I learned into my vernacular. That’s how I improve in my fluency.

QuasiUnaFantasia

Just adding to CG's gentle pouring of oil onto the waters (although my oil may inadvertently be ablaze, but at least I mean it in a good way).

It seems to me that there are cultures where Pete14's main contribution to the website, namely lighthearted flippancy, is not a thing, leading every comment by Pete to be taken at face value, even though he himself probably did not want that. It also seems to me that Pete is generally oblivious to this misunderstanding, and also not blessed with enough empathy to recognize the bafflement with which his comments are received by some.

As I see it, that combination is a recipe for much unhappiness.

I remember an old Donald Duck cartoon, where Donald tries to calm his temper by following the "Stop, and count to ten!" rule. Maybe that would work well here also, before posting in an agitated mood (of course, it did not actually work for D. Duck, but maybe we humans can transcend his abilities 🙂).

Pete14

David Lai That said, I have many differences with him that we couldn’t agree on even what most people consider to be reality situations. So, I do find what he posts rather weird.

This, up here, to begin with. According to him “what most people consider to be reality,” is followed by, “what he posts is rather weird.” Because I assume there’s only one reality (to stick with modeling vs. sampling discussion), and that is that modeling (Pianoteq) sounds like a “synth” to all, yet it turns out that some, not just Pete, do prefer it, and to this “minority” it sounds like “a piano,” if not like “the piano;” and yes, a few of these people (completely detached from reality) do play classical music, so it’s not just “Jazzers” that might have the audacity of preferring Pianoteq

David Lai All in all, I was indeed provoked by Pete’s (humble?) opinions, and I’m sorry that I’ve been out of character. That said, I have many differences with him that we couldn’t agree on even what most people consider to be reality situations. So, I do find what he posts rather weird.

Again, he’s ’the victim’, yet refuses to admit he called my writing “strange & dumb,” not to mention, that he implied that I’m not at the level of Mac; therefore, he speaks to me differently….

David Lai And I don’t know why he calls it having fun? Because as I listened to these posts, I don’t see the humor in them.

This is a valid point; that what I might perceive as humor might not be funny to all.

David Lai when I tried convincing him of reality, and he refuses to step down and continues to say that that synthesizer is the best piano plug-in available, I had nothing to do but I let him back down from the thread, because he is clearly not aware of how something sounds, to begin with. And from then on, I’ve been surprised at his words many times.

Do I need to say more? Yes!

I’m clearly not aware of “how something sounds,” and even though most of the sampling aficionados believe that sampling is “better than modeling,” I’m not allowed to say that to me that is not necessarily the case; of course, I’ll say it in my usual, tongue-in-cheek style, but still…..

David Lai So that’s what it’s all about. And interestingly, he claims to meet us in the middle, but he still is critical of sampling, and less so of modeling.

Exactly, and most of you are critical of modeling, and less so of sampling.

Okay, you do have a point here!

But it’s not that I don’t have empathy, or am oblivious to misunderstanding, but rather that sometimes I just go with the flow, and yes, that can lead to confrontations; especially when there are cultural differences at play. I get it.

Believe it or not, I do try to break “Pete” easily to foreigners (I don’t always succeed), but I’m a bit baffled by David; because sometimes he seems to be spot-on about my “light-hearted flippancy,” and even plays along, yet at times he turns around and takes everything I say literally……selective language barrier?

David Lai

Pete14 Exactly, and most of you are critical of modeling, and less so of sampling.

Yes, and why? Because PianoTeq sounds synthy, and not at all like a piano. Need this be stressed more?

Also, to clarify, the thing I found "strange" or "dumb" is to always do "IMHO" in every post, as suggested by Pete.

So, IMNSHO, when you wanted everything to follow what you wanted them to say, I played along, but I only reply to you like this, I'll never say IMHO to others except when context demanded so. IMHO, this isn't how people talk normally, at least in all the English-learning materials I've come across. IMHO, thisis really strange. OK, I think you've had enough of IMHO's, so I'll stop IMHO'ing here.

No. It means that I'm progressing in my fluency of English, but not enough to the extent that I can regard all your comments off face value.

Well, it turns out that whence I cometh from we do fancy saying IMHO, not after everything (which, by the way, is not what I suggested), but surely, after a heated opinion like “Pianoteq sounds synthy, and not at all like a piano,” an IMHO is appropriate…..IMHO!

In retrospect, and seeing that you went all “IMHO’ing,” I’d say your English is mighty fine, and I wonder, David Lai, have you been trolling Pete all along? 🤔

On a side note, I’d like to ask Quasi if he always uses a capital letter for the word English, or is he one of those lazy people that don’t even bother with capital letters at all (you know who you are)……

David Lai

Pete14 after a heated opinion like “Pianoteq sounds synthy, and not at all like a piano,” an IMHO is appropriate

It's not a heated opinion, it's a great description of the sound of PianoTeq. But wait, you don't pay attention to how it sounds, so I guess this isn't a worthy point of exploring. I feel sad for you!

David B

Pete14 CG and David B (the bosses),

Hey, I like the sound of that. 💪

Pete14 BTW, I’m not going anywhere, unless the bosses decide to fire me,

Fired? It would have to be an offense of moral turpitude. You're like a tenured professor here. You can annoy people as much as you want and there's nothing we can do about it. 😀

God Bless,
David

Pete14 after a heated opinion like “Pianoteq sounds synthy, and not at all like a piano,”

Better pianists than me like Pianoteq. Better pianists than me dislike Pianoteq. It's all just a matter of taste.

Pete14

As a recently appointed tenured professor, here, at PCU, I’d like to first thank my superiors for this honor, and then assure the community that I will remain humble despite the huge, corner office (with included secretary) I’ve been assigned.

Sure, I have the best view from up here, but as I look down at the naive students walking about in a haste, I don’t think “oh, how much better than them/they I have it” (secretary is a 20-year-old Swiss girl), but rather, I ponder about the possibilities, and how one of these students could some day become tenured, too; of course, I also see the students that’ll never make it past the gates to success, but I do not judge them/they; I simply observe and take notes. I take notes…..

Now, let us continue with the discussion: “Modern D vs Pianoteq vs The People,” but instead of pitting one against the other (“vs”) I suggest we simply outline the differences, and yes, also the similarities between these; and I’d also like for us to be a bit more grateful of all the options we have today that were simply not available back in the 70s, 80s, and perhaps even the 90s….

Yours truly,

Pete XIV (tenured professor at PCU).

David Lai

Pete14 As a recently appointed tenured professor, here, at PCU

I question the committee, upon what kind of basis did you give Pete this tenureship?

David Lai

David B You're like a tenured professor here. You can annoy people as much as you want and there's nothing we can do about it.

And that's the sad part. He can annoy many people, and you can't even do a thing about it. That's very much like a tenured professor.

Only, he's not a tenured professor, so you can still do some things about it, I guess?

I'm just trying to understand the grammar here.

I'm just playing around. Anybody can get booted anytime for any reason. This is a privately owned forum and Gene is our supreme leader. Thankfully, he has chosen to create a community where the need for moderating is minimal. Diversity of topics and the flowering of individual thought is the norm here at PianoClack. We rely more on a self-policing community standard and only intervene when there is no apparent resolution in sight.

Pete's affinity with Pianoteq and distain for 100 layers of sampling gold is his opinion. We all know that Pianoteq is the redheaded stepchild in the virtual instrument world. Pianoteq needs an advocate. They've got Pete. Maybe he works for Pianoteq. He is a known associate of subversive agencies. He's been on our radar and we have a tactical team at the ready for a snatch and interrogation and possible reeducation when the time comes. 😀

God Bless,
David

David Lai

David B Got it. Thanks, David. Then I'll not worry about him anymore. His distain for what's real, sounding good, ETC, is driving me crazy.

David Lai

David B if one day his reeducation happens, that would be quite the news.

pianow

David B Maybe he works for Pianoteq

imagine modartt hired someone to make their product look better and after a year or so, most people (who've been neutral about their product) hate it with passion 😂 firing him now won't do em any good, they should melt him and send the remains to the bottom of the ocean.
excellent job you fat troll.

David B

David Lai if one day his reeducation happens, that would be quite the news.

Someday you'll see a discussion started by Pete, "Which Steinway D Sampled Piano Should I Get?" Followed by, "which external SSD's are best for running sampled libraries?" Followed by, "When is VI Labs going to have their next sale?"

Then he'll finally have the confidence to upload his rendition of "Fir" Elise. 😀

God Bless,
David

David Lai

David B Then he'll finally have the confidence to upload his rendition of "Fir" Elise.

Haha, I had to say your play on the German "fur" is rather interesting. That said, you don't need too much external SSD space for a VI Labs library. Modern D is 18 GB, which even works on my 512 GB SSD.
