Modern D vs Pianoteq vs The People

David Lai

Pete14 and I’m beginning to think you use the “language barrier” excuse when convenient

Oh, come on there, my first language is indeed not English, though I might sound American.

Pete14

Okay, it looks like we’re trying to prove who has the biggest D at this point, so I’m going to sign-off (simile for stop) for the time being, but do not assume for a minute that this means I concede, because I’ve yet to find a man with a bigger D…….not even the Modern D can come close to Pete!

We shall continue this fight for D supremacy tomorrow, because, really, I have to do the dishes, and look after my huge D!

To be continued……

Hahaha, alright, then, Pete. All I can say is, I still don't agree with what you say, and you have some rather odd opinions.

And I have to say, you certainly got me out of character a bit with your provocations. Maybe that was your purpose all along? I don't know, but I certainly worked with playing this word game with you. Take care.

MacMacMac

I used to enjoy Pete14 when he was a "gentle" troll. He was bonkers, but funny and likable.

But no longer. He's become a PITA, without redeeming qualities. I think it's time for him to go. Really.

HZPiano

RIP I actually am one who believes you have much better hearing than most 🙂

Same here!

Pete14 Oh please, don’t flatter yourself; what you do have is an above-average ego

you yap like a Bit¢h, troll.

Pete14 I’ll give you a good one here: Rubalcaba (a master musician) doesn’t have perfect pitch; he can’t tell a C from a D (from ear) if his life depended on it, yet this idiot down here does (have perfect pitch), and he can’t play a tritone substitution if his life depended on it!

I'm sure they were talking about the ability to tell different characteristics apart (like this is bright, this one's dull, that one is a bit midrange focused and the pinoteq is synthetic), so...why the hell you brought "perfect pitch" (a truly rare ability) to the discussion remains a great mystery, but i tell you this : perfect pitch isn't a "musicians_only" ability (and by musicians i mean instrument players.)
a mix engineer can also have perfect pitch, yea they can't play instruments but having that ability helps them mix several instruments a lot better...
another example, singers.

on the other hand there are thousands of musicians who don't have this ability but they're the best of the best out there,

the thing is both of these groups of people have good ears (at least most of them)
and I'm sure David lai is one of them too, how do i know? because i also have great ears.

oh and... IM"HHH"O btw...

David B

That was a really neat video. I enjoyed listening to you talk. You're very articulate in English even as a second language. You actually speak more intelligently than many Americans who only speak English. 😀

God Bless,
David

I saw that video about @David Lai quite a while ago, indeed quite a nice interview (of sorts) / introduction.

Cheers and happy studies,

MacMacMac

Oh, so I became a biotch within the last month or so?

Not even a month ago you said something to the extent that I was “a likable troll,” but it seems like in just a month I went from “likable troll,” to “unredeemable troll,” but you know what, Mac? I can see right through your facade, because the truth is that you got offended at my poking fun at MAGA, and ever since you went on the attack; that’s the truth.

I’m a biotch? yet you’re the one posting huge sign-posts back-to-back, “don’t feed the troll,” without even reading through the thread for some context; something I ask other members to do before they condemn me.

Take this thread, for example, everything was going fine; we were all half-joking, tongue-in-cheek, and doing our usual bashing of each other’s preferences whilst still making salient points (yes, it’s possible to walk and chew gum at the same time), then, very suddenly, David decides to insult me (I already stated what he said, so please scroll up to read his post). I responded in a less-insulting way (much less insulting), and then it went from there, and he accused me of ‘putting words in his mouth,’ so thank god we only have half an hour to edit our posts; because I wouldn’t doubt he would’ve edited his post (once again, for anyone in the dark, look at the post that started it all, and also how much fun we were having before that)….

CyberGene

I'll try to be the mediator here 🙂 And no, I'm not, a saint either, I'm a typical short-tempered Eastern European, as you well know 🤣 But since I can somehow see from aside this time, let me share my opinion.

I have noticed that Pete has indeed become slightly bitchier lately 🙂 Maybe he has been provoked. Maybe many times. By Mac, by someone else, by the Modern D euphoria, whatever. And I also noticed that David's comment about the perfect pitch might have been taken as an insult. But it didn't come out of thin air either, he's been provoked too. He's probably not familiar with Pete and his type of humor. But again, Pete's been slightly edgy lately which can aggravate the situation if one is not aware that Pete is not malicious. Add to it that some people have been fueling David with those constant accusations against Pete being a troll and you have the perfect storm.

Now, I can't say whether the chicken or the egg came first and who's to blame. Maybe no one is to blame 🙂

Pete14

CG and David B (the bosses),

I promise I will cease and desist, but I must say one more thing, if you’d allow me,

MacMacMac Hey, what about all us peoles!?

That was Mac about a week ago, so it could be that I was wrong about the “MAGA” thing, and this constant switching positions (“he’s likable;” “he’s unredeemable”) is just his modus operandi, or it just depends on what side of the bed he wakes up, whether one day he plays and the other he disdains.

I was the one who started the whole “peole” thing, and guess what? Del Vento, himself, found it funny, and even played along with this “unredeemable troll,” who, according to Mac & Friends, ‘has to go.’

BTW, I’m not going anywhere, unless the bosses decide to fire me, and truly, I’m glad that the “piling-up” tactic doesn’t work ‘round here; where a few loud voices simply have to get some support from some of their friends, and, of a sudden, banned gets Pete…..no questions asked.

Look at all the evidence above (a little tongue-in-cheek), and decide for yourselves who is more consistent (I’m always Pete), and who changes along with the weather, or whatever……

BTW, I rarely get “bitchy,” and even John found it odd that I’d gone full-biotch, because it’s not what I do, and most people ‘round here know that my “insults” are meant in jest because I leave enough room for this to come across, so no, Pete has not suddenly turned into a biotch; however, like any other human being, he, too, can dish it out when pushed…..

IMHO!

David Lai

CyberGene And I also noticed that David's comment about the perfect pitch might have been taken as an insult. But it didn't come out of thin air either, he's been provoked too. Well analyzed! That’s exactly what happened. And I admit that I was rather out of character yesterday, but it didn’t come without a cause. When Pete posted that my hearing was equated to ego, I was offended. I certainly didn’t flatter myself either. But then he followed up a comment regarding musicians and perfect pitch, and its relation to hearing. So I had to tell him that there are people who do play by ear and their perfect pitch does work.

All in all, I was indeed provoked by Pete’s (humble?) opinions, and I’m sorry that I’ve been out of character. That said, I have many differences with him that we couldn’t agree on even what most people consider to be reality situations. So, I do find what he posts rather weird.

And I don’t know why he calls it having fun? Because as I listened to these posts, I don’t see the humor in them. Rather, I’m shocked at his edginess. Maybe he is deconstructing his views? If the recent Modern D enthusiasm reminds us of anything, I think it is the accuracy of samples, and how such well scripted products that don’t compromise in playability, is much better than the synth that is PianoTeq. when I tried convincing him of reality, and he refuses to step down and continues to say that that synthesizer is the best piano plug-in available, I had nothing to do but I let him back down from the thread, because he is clearly not aware of how something sounds, to begin with. And from then on, I’ve been surprised at his words many times.

So that’s what it’s all about. And interestingly, he claims to meet us in the middle, but he still is critical of sampling, and less so of modeling. And I thought he was beginning to understand the sampling side days ago, but I guess we still have some ways to go.

David Lai

David B thank you, David! I’m still learning the English language. I feel it’s fascinating, especially when you tap into the people and culture of, in this case, the US where I’m now located. So every day when I’m here, I learned something new about the people in the language they speak, and I incorporate some of what I learned into my vernacular. That’s how I improve in my fluency.

QuasiUnaFantasia

Just adding to CG's gentle pouring of oil onto the waters (although my oil may inadvertently be ablaze, but at least I mean it in a good way).

It seems to me that there are cultures where Pete14's main contribution to the website, namely lighthearted flippancy, is not a thing, leading every comment by Pete to be taken at face value, even though he himself probably did not want that. It also seems to me that Pete is generally oblivious to this misunderstanding, and also not blessed with enough empathy to recognize the bafflement with which his comments are received by some.

As I see it, that combination is a recipe for much unhappiness.

I remember an old Donald Duck cartoon, where Donald tries to calm his temper by following the "Stop, and count to ten!" rule. Maybe that would work well here also, before posting in an agitated mood (of course, it did not actually work for D. Duck, but maybe we humans can transcend his abilities 🙂).

Pete14

David Lai That said, I have many differences with him that we couldn’t agree on even what most people consider to be reality situations. So, I do find what he posts rather weird.

This, up here, to begin with. According to him “what most people consider to be reality,” is followed by, “what he posts is rather weird.” Because I assume there’s only one reality (to stick with modeling vs. sampling discussion), and that is that modeling (Pianoteq) sounds like a “synth” to all, yet it turns out that some, not just Pete, do prefer it, and to this “minority” it sounds like “a piano,” if not like “the piano;” and yes, a few of these people (completely detached from reality) do play classical music, so it’s not just “Jazzers” that might have the audacity of preferring Pianoteq

David Lai All in all, I was indeed provoked by Pete’s (humble?) opinions, and I’m sorry that I’ve been out of character. That said, I have many differences with him that we couldn’t agree on even what most people consider to be reality situations. So, I do find what he posts rather weird.

Again, he’s ’the victim’, yet refuses to admit he called my writing “strange & dumb,” not to mention, that he implied that I’m not at the level of Mac; therefore, he speaks to me differently….

David Lai And I don’t know why he calls it having fun? Because as I listened to these posts, I don’t see the humor in them.

This is a valid point; that what I might perceive as humor might not be funny to all.

David Lai when I tried convincing him of reality, and he refuses to step down and continues to say that that synthesizer is the best piano plug-in available, I had nothing to do but I let him back down from the thread, because he is clearly not aware of how something sounds, to begin with. And from then on, I’ve been surprised at his words many times.

Do I need to say more? Yes!

I’m clearly not aware of “how something sounds,” and even though most of the sampling aficionados believe that sampling is “better than modeling,” I’m not allowed to say that to me that is not necessarily the case; of course, I’ll say it in my usual, tongue-in-cheek style, but still…..

David Lai So that’s what it’s all about. And interestingly, he claims to meet us in the middle, but he still is critical of sampling, and less so of modeling.

Exactly, and most of you are critical of modeling, and less so of sampling.

Pete14

Okay, you do have a point here!

But it’s not that I don’t have empathy, or am oblivious to misunderstanding, but rather that sometimes I just go with the flow, and yes, that can lead to confrontations; especially when there are cultural differences at play. I get it.

Believe it or not, I do try to break “Pete” easily to foreigners (I don’t always succeed), but I’m a bit baffled by David; because sometimes he seems to be spot-on about my “light-hearted flippancy,” and even plays along, yet at times he turns around and takes everything I say literally……selective language barrier?

David Lai

Pete14 Exactly, and most of you are critical of modeling, and less so of sampling.

Yes, and why? Because PianoTeq sounds synthy, and not at all like a piano. Need this be stressed more?

Also, to clarify, the thing I found "strange" or "dumb" is to always do "IMHO" in every post, as suggested by Pete.

So, IMNSHO, when you wanted everything to follow what you wanted them to say, I played along, but I only reply to you like this, I'll never say IMHO to others except when context demanded so. IMHO, this isn't how people talk normally, at least in all the English-learning materials I've come across. IMHO, thisis really strange. OK, I think you've had enough of IMHO's, so I'll stop IMHO'ing here.

No. It means that I'm progressing in my fluency of English, but not enough to the extent that I can regard all your comments off face value.

Pete14

Well, it turns out that whence I cometh from we do fancy saying IMHO, not after everything (which, by the way, is not what I suggested), but surely, after a heated opinion like “Pianoteq sounds synthy, and not at all like a piano,” an IMHO is appropriate…..IMHO!

In retrospect, and seeing that you went all “IMHO’ing,” I’d say your English is mighty fine, and I wonder, David Lai, have you been trolling Pete all along? 🤔

On a side note, I’d like to ask Quasi if he always uses a capital letter for the word English, or is he one of those lazy people that don’t even bother with capital letters at all (you know who you are)……
