As the amplitude of the string is lowered, the energy in the high frequency part of the spectrum is lessened. Therefore strings associated with higher frequencies are excited less by lower amplitude signals from a struck string.

pc-king I didn’t mean there’s no resonance at all 🙂 But I’ve tested this on real pianos and after the initial loud attack, the excitation energy and the resulting resonances are rather low.
As to Modern D, I’m wondering if they actually switch samples or use some other way. I sold it already and never really got to know it in depth, does it support string resonance (as an effect probably, not to be mistaken with damper resonance)? I think there was a checkbox? If so, maybe that’s how they do it.
In 20 years, we'll certainly have over 100 velocity levels, and 100 release samples for each of them, for the various release points, the same for half-pedal. That's already 1.8 million samples. Additionally, there are resonance samples for each key, which the software mixes in when that key or the sustain pedal is pressed and another one is struck that generates resonance (octave, fifth, etc.). Again, for 100 velocity levels. Another 88*30(?)*100, a total of at least 2 million samples. That'll be great; it could certainly be automated, and the recording session would then take a few years.

Long story short: As a physicist and pianist, I claim that Modartt’s approach is a dead end.
In VI Labs Modern D, the sustain pedal effect is not achieved by triggering separate “pedal down” sample sets, nor by switching between samples. Instead, it’s designed more realistically — only the sustain resonance has been captured and is added dynamically when the pedal is pressed, including true pedal transition effects both between pedal-up and pedal-down and between pedal-down and pedal-up states.
This is something the VSL software cannot reproduce, as it follows a completely different approach. UVI’s programming for VI Labs pays close attention to the fine details of how a real piano behaves, down to the subtleties of pedal interaction and sympathetic resonance.
Speaking of which, the sympathetic resonance in Modern D is outstanding. Everything in a real piano is about resonance — and a well-programmed piano doesn’t need to be drowned in artificial reverb to cover up design flaws. Another well-designed virtual piano is the Garritan CFX, although in that case, the sympathetic resonance is modeled, not sampled — a detail that’s rarely mentioned but very significant.
It’s a shame, because VSL has truly beautiful pianos — excellent recording engineers, and highly skilled piano preparation teams — but their software player hasn’t been developed or updated in years. And when you bring up these realism-related topics with their support team — not about the samples themselves, but about how the software implements them — you often get dismissed. They even treat such discussions as off-limits.
Even something as simple as a silent key option (velocity 0), which would be extremely useful for hybrid pianos, is considered a forbidden subject when talking to VSL support. And if you dare to suggest an improvement or express a different opinion, you’re treated like a black sheep — or even an enemy. It all feels like a lack of humility, which is disappointing given the talent and potential behind their instruments.
OlivierW Yes, that's how I've experienced VSL customer service, too. They leave everything as it is, and that's it. If you can't have a professional classical pianist test a product before selling it, you should at least listen to your customers. It's no use promising the moon ("sounds like heaven") or having the product "tested" by amateurs in embarrassing videos.

No, they sampled all the resonances. So they are from the piano, not artificial as you claim.
David Lai Yes, Olivier has already corrected that.
OlivierW Garritan actually does something funnier. It has both pedal down resonance, and a separate sustain resonance knob which adds extra resonance on top of the pedal down samples and can be controlled by the pedaling behavior.
I always find the full pedal down resonance less powerful in piano VSTs than real concert grands, even in top notch products like Garritan and Modern D. So I am happy to have that knob in Garritan so that I can dial in more to my taste. And it also makes up the sound for more detailed pedal switching behavior.
It's really unfortunate that there is no control over sustain resonance in VSL products. They have great sound and dynamics but are a bit lacking in programming.
Tozen I continue to dream of a day when we can pick and choose mics we want in a custom package. The pricing continues to be the biggest obstacle for these libraries.
Agree, I really wish they would go down this route. I'm increasingly resentful of being expected to pony up for so many superfluous mic positions when I only need a couple. The current pricing structure is out of line with competitive (and in the case of Modern D, notably superior) products, and feels somewhat opportunistic.
I do think the "Essentials" series is a step in the right direction, but this entry-level tier should really be offered from the get-go instead of having to wait several years after the initial release.
OlivierW I always use a multi band compressor on VSL pianos. This really helps things. I don't use the compressor in the actual VSL mixer.
I wish they would change the mic position names. They're all condensers.
We can not mistake virtual stuff for the real ones, modeled, sampled, or AI-trained.
No matter what they do, they can only present similar feelings instead of real physical world.
Pianos are pianos. Libraries are always distinguished from the real stuff. Don't lose our mind.
Jane Wonderful playing Jane. damn it, I had convinced myself to steer clear of another high priced VSL piano but now I will have to get the trial. The timbre is clearly gorgeous and I love the intimate sound. In my case I’ll be testing for dead notes which I feel are present in most of the VSL pianos I own. It does sound like they may have finally gotten their act together in terms of piano preparation and recording. Out of curiosity Jane, what model MIDI controller are you playing, which 1887 presets are you using, and did you make any adjustments (vcurve, note editor…)?

Oyyyy... Thanks for the undeserved praise, Jon. My casual sit down was so sloppy I hesitated to post it. But it isn't about me... it's about the piano. I did use una corda in a few places (like the chords in the sans lourdeur section).
I've played with the VSTi a bit more. At this point I don't think I'll be putting $400-ish into it. For me, it would be more of a character piano than an everyday driver. Others may agree with my mother, who often told me that my taste is only in my mouth 😉
If I have time tomorrow or Thursday I'll try to post a recording of just a few chromatic scales so you can get a better sense of the naked notes.
You asked about settings. I've previously posted a mishmash of screenshots but I'll post below what I used for the uploads.
I originally started with the "concert" setting. After that, @clavierhaus remarked that I had uploaded mono recordings.
The "concert" setting changes the width and orientation of the close mics (the red and black lines and dots at the top of the fader in one of my earlier screenshots) and the first things I posted did sound mono.
I removed those original recordings and re-uploaded with the settings shown below. I started with the "intimate" preset and then killed all mics but the one I was demoing, and killed all reverb.
My controller is an N3 (not N3X) which doesn't put out the full MIDI range, so I squish the velocity slope a bit at the top and bottom, as shown in one of the screen shots.
No per-note editing. No EQ. Recorded into Audacity and normalized the audio to -2.5db.

CyberGene It doesn't work exactly like that. It's only the loud attack portion of a note that has enough energy to excite the open strings (when all dampers are open). However, if you first play a note without the damper pedal and hold it and then press the damper pedal, the resonances will be much lower, especially if you pressed the pedal after the attack portion. In practice you might not even hear them once short time has elapsed. Just switching from the non-sustain sample to the sustain one is wrong and will lead to audible artifacts.
This works very well in Vienna Imperial. It's not an immediate transition to the pedal-down samples. The note "swells" like it does on a grand. It's quite subtle, but audible. If you touch the soundboard on a piano you can always feel vibrations as long as the sound is audible, and they'll excite the other strings as long as a note sounds. Vibrations are transmitted to all the strings whether the dampers are used or not -it's just that you can't hear them with the pedal up. In real life it takes a short while for the other strings to "catch up" when the dampers are lifted.
Incidentally, on some pianos the strings are never fully damped as the dampers are quite light. Staccato notes are just as short, but there's a tiny reverb tail afterwards. Old Bechstein grands are known for this. Duplex scaling on modern pianos has a similar effect, where the undamped pitched parts of the string ring out slightly after the note is stopped. A piano without duplex scaling and with heavy dampers can sound very dry. Duplex scaling can sometimes cause a dissonant whine. I often hear this on performances of Beethoven's Op.111 during the trills.
