Shure SRH1840 - real or not

SouthPark do you have any other headphones you can compare ( currently owned / past owned / demo listened ) to and describe how it performs

NotBnW NBW … for my piano (digi piano), I was just using sennheiser 450bt, which are just fine for my purposes. The clone srh1840 sounds very good … and the open back style. I also have a few momentum 2 oebt (on ear, not around ear) and one momentum 3, which sound very good to me, and has electronic system for external noise suppression.

Currently awaiting on back order a yh-wL500, which is going to take a while to get here, due to apparently no or low stock. That is a wireless one from yamaha. I'm going to see how it actually performs on digital piano. Hopefully it will work well with the digi piano.

Spend the money on the real thing.
Wait for a sale if you have the patience.

other than specialty vapor deposited materials, headphone drivers cost about $1 to make.

the entirety of the market is kind of a scam. comes with the territory.

For sure, there's the moral/ethical side of things to consider. I did buy two. And what's done has been done. If I get struck by lightning, then I'm going to blame hmmm …. let me think. I'll have to think about that one.

ok so, good news and bad news

the seller sent me the wrong headphone, I got a k702 instead of the Shure which is quite a bit cheaper than the shure one

the good news is that, what I thought is an obvious counterfeit akg is actually a genuine one. the moment I pick it up I told myself it's an low effort fake with cheap plastic comparable to children's toy with a lot of creeky sound

so I look up some reviews and one of them are disassembly video, the guy using his finger knuckle and knock on the k702 plastic housing has the same cheap hollow plastic sound that mine did, another written article review stating stiff headband which is what I have aswell. the driver seems to be the same cloudy yellow membrane found on actual k702

and the part that everyone cares the most, the sounds is surprisingly….. neutral. it's not obnoxiously bassy nor piercing high. it just sounds flat

so I listening it more for couple of days and did some EQ adjustment to suit my taste better. the conclusion is that it is a better headphone than what I have previously owned ( HE400SE ). stock tuning is flat and ( mostly ) not piercing compare to hifiman that likes to copy beyerdynamic's piercing high, better instrument separation, very similar sound stage and a bit worse imaging. the only minor complaints I have is that the fit takes a bit to get used to since it doesn't clamp hard to form tighter seal, and i can notice that theres slight empty void in sound on parts that wasn't covered by the driver in the earcup

overall, I spent 60 USD for open box new k702

The non-genuine SRH1840 are still doing excellently. Sounding great. I had a recent headphone mic-art photo, and just updating it with this one. With the relatively new YH-WL500 in there. All of the headphones work great.

Still very impressed with the non-gen SRH1840 headphones.

@SouthPark wanted to thank you for your highly detailed post. I recently bought a pair of Shure 1840's that look identical to your 'fake' pair from Ebay (even down to the plugs and foil finish). Long story short, I contacted Shure, as I thought it fit to warn them about clones on the market. I provided them with high resolution images and the service tag number. They confirmed to me that they appear to by genuine and the service tag (which was not recognised online) is genuine but from a batch manufactured in 2013. They understandably could not 100% confirm they are gunuine but are confident they are. Message from them is below and I'm happy to share images if it would help anyone:

"The serial number is recognised by our system, but indicates that the headphones are from 2013.

Our service engineers cannot recognise anything from the pictures that would suggest that the product is not one of ours, apart from the metallic foil finish of the drivers, which - if the headphones are actually 11 years old - may also be worn off. (Unfortunately, the link to the advert from which you purchased the headphones was not copied, which is why we are unable to check this)

Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to make a fully accurate statement.
If you have doubts about the authenticity of the product, we would recommend cancelling the purchase if possible."

Hope this helps anyone who has doubts. And they sound amazing. Currenlty driving them with a Fiio K11 DAC and listening to FLAC files via Tidal.
