As you probably know, and perhaps the reason for you posting here, there are a number of DIY'ers here, starting from the path opener and forum founder and maintainer @CyberGene -- if you didn't know and you posted here by accident, let me know and I will collect a list of posts on this topic for your consumption (hey, CG, probably we should make a summary post with all those links and made it sticky at the top? Now, obviously every person has their own reasons for embarking in a project like this, and all of those reasons are slightly different, but typically are "I want something that is not available in the market". Occasionally there are economic reasons (make your own may be cheaper than buying, at least for the very top-of-the-line), or mere hobby/pastime/fun like generic woodworking. In fact, I initially wanted to do something like you have done, because one (minor) reason for me to make this instrument was exactly hand size, for both me and my daughter. The reason was and remained minor, because I am such a poor player, and she is still growing, that it really does not matter yet, so I settled for a much easier to find existing grand action.
In my search, I found that building a keyboard like this (or ordering it from keyboard manufacturers) was very complicated and expensive. So please tell us more. I get the straight keysticks (which might cause troubles once you have 88 of them since they will block access to everything, but you can design around that and probably that's what you're planning to do). That part is relatively easy and that's exactly what I had planned to do myself (even though I planned to use pins, buttons, balance rail and punchings explicitly manufactured for piano, rather than DIY as you did, to reduce the possibility for errors). But the keytops, oh my!! What stopped myself was that I thought the complications for this were not worth given my current situation and the fact that I saw a commercial reduced key keyboard coming very soon. Sadly that hasn't happened, and I now tend to feel that some of the people in PASK are doing more harm than good by spreading that imminence, but I digress….
Back to building the keyboard, the keytops are very complicated in shape, and cannot be made thin on top of straight keystick (they are made thin on top of shaped keysticks, but that's just moving the problem elsewhere). In fact you made the keytops thick. The 2D shape (viewed from the top) could be easily done on thin material, but the 3D shape to avoid hitting each other when played (since they rotate from the pivot point, not exactly vertically) looked more complicated. Most importantly, I could not find a place/way to easily build them, because of thickness. You just mentioned "laser cut" and glossed on all the interesting details!!!! How did you laser cut such thick pieces of material? What kind of material is that? What hw and sw did you use? Are you willing to share information on any of that? The black/sharp keys obviously are easier, and it looks like you made them of painted plywood? If so I suggest that you use enamel, rather than paint (can give you brand name of what I used if you care).
Minor note: let me say that the action you build is not piano, but clavichord (I say that with utmost respect, in fact I own an acoustic clavichord which I like a lot!) -- if you want to make it into a piano action, or actually any action (piano, clavichord, harpsichord or whatever) you would need to implement something more.
