Garritan CFX on Apple Silicon

CyberGene

Update (November 2024): Garritan CFX works flawlessly in Aria Player on Apple Silicon now. See this discussion.

The Garritan support website and forums are a huge mess and I wanted to provide some details about running Garritan CFX on Apple Silicon. There was recently some information about Garritan supporting Apple Silicon:

https://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500003504881-Finale-Garritan-Compatibility-with-Apple-Silicon-M1-

According to that page, Apple Silicon is supported natively for Garritan CFX but only if you run it through the Aria Player* and not through the standalone Garritan CFX app which still runs through Rosetta 2. In my experience, running Garritan CFX through Rosetta 2 translation is quite good but not entirely problem free and I get occasional glitches. Now, it's important to note that running Garritan CFX through the Aria Player instead of its own standalone player won't provide all the features of Garritan CFX. I'm not sure what exact features are missing though. I think it's the convolution reverb that is missing (which is totally fine with me) but there may be other missing features, let me know if you have that information (P.S. There's a problem when playing many notes with the sustain pedal, see below). Now, on that page they also provide a link for downloading the Apple Silicon native Aria Player, however when I downloaded it and ran it, I got an error which other people also experience “Garritan ARIA Player Cannot connect to engine, please re-install“:

I tried reinstalling it and whatnot but without any success and Garritan are not responding to people that have this problem. After a lot of searching on the Internet I actually found another Garritan page that describes how to fully uninstall the Aria Player:

https://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/217750048-Uninstalling-the-ARIA-Player-and-ARIA-Engine-

I followed it, however on steps 6 and 10 where they ask you to delete the entire Garritan folder I didn't do that because in that folder there are also the Garritan CFX installation files and deleting them will mess it up and you will have to reinstall it, so instead I expanded it and deleted only the Aria Player sub-folder.

After that I restarted my Mac and installed the Apple Silicon version of Aria Player from the first link (as of now it's 2.0.0.1) and voila. Now the Aria Player runs natively, I can open the Garritan CFX sample inside and play with insane performance without any glitches. I hope that helps people who are struggling with the same problem.

*Aria Player is a sample player that comes with the Garritan CFX installation as a separate app along the main Garritan CFX app. To my knowledge the Aria Player can be used for loading various other SFZ instruments besides Garritan CFX. It's similar to Kontakt, just different format of samples. Most people will use the standalone app and thus will not be aware that they also have the Aria Player installed and can use it alternatively to load and play Garritan CFX. It's only the Aria Player that is Apple Silicon native as of now.

CyberGene and voila

A super contribution, CyberGene !!

I'm not on Apple (sometimes considering an M1 Mini, though) but if I were, I'd love this information.

Cheers and happy native playing,

HZ

It's weird how Garritan, which doesn't even seem to support their CFX library anymore, has a silicon version for their Aria player. On the other hand you have VSL, which is ultra engaged with their clients and products, and they still haven't released a silicon version of their player. What could they possibly be waiting for? 🤷‍♂️

If I remember correctly, Garritan/MakeMusic, et. al., have a lot more instruments that just the piano. So, I suspect that keeping their sample player current with the latest operating systems is necessary to support those products.

CyberGene

HZPiano I would’ve noticed something like that. I’ll test later today to confirm but I don’t think it’s true, maybe Gombessa had some weird problem. Sounds like his pedal is sending a value of less than 127 when fully pressed and he hears the faster decay of half-pedaled notes. I think he might want to reinstall everything just in case and also observe the MIDI values of his pedal.

CyberGene

Sounds all rather plausible, so let's hope so!

Well, Gombessa is right! 😲

I started testing it and at first it seemed like all was OK, here's one example where I play an octave in the bass with the sustain pedal and I immediately lift my hands and leave only the pedal pressed until the notes decay naturally. It's then followed by the same octave played but I hold the keys pressed and the sustain pedal pressed until they decay:

aria-two-notes.mp3

So, all is good and they sound identical. And so I thought he probably had some problem with his configuration/installation.

But then I decided to test with a complex scenario involving a lot of notes that would put the polyphony at test:

aria-polyphony.mp3

And voila, the Aria Player starts cutting notes abruptly one by one with an audible pop. I guess it has something to do with the polyphony stealing algorithm or something but to me is mostly a bug in Aria Player since I doubt I reach the polyphony of 128. It's a shame... I think if one plays simpler music with not much polyphony, he will be good with the Aria Player but once you start holding a lot of notes with the sustain pedal, the issue will happen.

I constantly see here and there different reports that the damper pedal in some or other sampled VSTi does not work as it is supposed to, which does not add to my enthusiasm to start using VSTi. Is there any list of those sampled VSTi (I think modelling-based VSTi don't have such a problem?) which don't have any problems with a damper pedal, and which work as it should, including half-pedal gradations, etc.?

Garritan CFX when run from its standalone app has perfect pedaling (well, you should also apply my re-pedaling fix to make the re-pedaling timing better). I have also heard most of the VSL libraries have perfect pedaling too. Of course modeled pianos such as Pianoteq are spot on, since that’s where modeling shines (but some people find the timbre realism to be unsatisfactory, me included).

HZPiano

CyberGene Well, Gombessa is right! 😲

A Big Oops then! Yet quite important for us to know.

By the way I referred Gombessa to this thread in case he's interested and/or would like to participate 🙂.

CyberGene I decided to test

So thanks for testing!

I can only report on VI Labs' Modern U which is my daily piano, and think it to work perfectly. I think their Ravenscroft, which I incidentally play, does too.

I also have the older True Keys pianos but never really play them so I cannot comment sensibly on their pedaling behavior.

Cheers and happy playing,

Thanks you HZ. If you don't mind, please send my kind regards to Cybergene! It's been a while since I've seen the PC crew and I miss them all.

Regards passed on 🙂.
