Interesting... I've been hoping Ivory would sample a new piano specifically for the Ivory 3 engine as I've been curious to see how it would handle different instruments, but I have to admit this isn't quite what I had in mind. I was hoping their next release would be something really different, not just a reboot of an already existing instrument, and certainly not another Steinway D.

I've never tried the original Ivory II version of this instrument, though I gather it's quite highly regarded. And maybe it's just my mind playing tricks on me, but I seem to detect in the demo video some of the same slightly over-processed qualities that bug me about the German D.

In any case, unlike with the Modern D, I'm in no rush to try this out, but I'll be curious to see what others think when the reviews start rolling in.

jdg78 The synthetic quality also happens around the middle C and surrounding keys like on the German D. Now that I'm listening to this on my speakers, I do feel that they've increased the forte range, but over all dynamic range (volume wise) is still similar.

I'll read it after lunch, but I guess my observations are close. It says "remastered recordings of" the piano. So yeah, they may have already recorded this way back when they did the piano for Ivory II.

David Lai If you're looking for a character piano, then Imperfect Samples may be the way to go. Not me, though. 🙂

Thank you David, but I'm not looking for a character piano, quite the opposite actually. What I want is straight up a good playing and sounding piano that is just my default piano. I don't record much (although I hope to be able to do that more in the future) so the most important for me is as good playing experience as possible. The VSL CFX is close to fulfill that for me as it feels really good to play. And I don't mind so much the "fake" una corda or the sup par resonance, it still plays better than any digital piano I've played. The only thing that really bothers me is the tuning so if I find a piano that everything else is equally good or better and improves on the tuning I would be happy.

johanibraaten Then Imperfect Samples won't be for you, sorry. And as far as I know for now, the Ivory III American Concert D is basically old recordings remastered. So take it what you will.

I got some Ivory II piano licenses along my used VPC1 as a package deal (which was a bargain!). So I have Ivory II American Concert D. When played with Ivory 3 software, it sounds perhaps a tad better already. So, well, a repackaged and improved instrument may be nice, but for me not sure if worth $139 🤔

Jose EB5AGV I agree, now that I've read the specs, it certainly sounds like they've basically done a repackage. Hmm… Interesting situation here. Wait till when they could show us the mic perspectives.

$249 for a repackage?

But I gotta give ‘em credit; because they could’ve hired a bunch of models to pose as engineers at work sampling that 1951 Steinway D from scratch, all over again……instead they come right out and said it, “it’s the same bunch of recordings for $249, and you’re gonna buy it no matter what!”

I know it’ll be running through the new engine, and perhaps, if the original samples were good enough, they felt there was no reason to sample the instrument again….?

But that price…..ouch!

I don't have the original Ivory 2 American D so I don't know if this repackage is overpriced. What did the original sell for? I'm not tempted to get the new one since I suspect after it's washed through the RGB engine it will sound similar to the Ivory 3 German D that I bought for $230.

I do prefer American D's over the German D's (with the ones I have), but I suspect the difference here might be negligible. We'll see.

This could very well be the case, so I advise anyone in a similar situation to first try out the demo before pulling the trigger on this one……surely, they must offer a “free trial” of sorts?

CyberGene Sounds really nice, although I'm getting more and more under the impression that Steinways aren't exactly my thing, I'm too used to the CFX which is my absolute favorite 😀

I love Steinways, but the CFX has its own magic. I haven't heard the updated CFX grand yet.

For decades, it was Steinway and non-Steinway, as if Steinway was the "proper" piano. These libraries are allowing people to get quite a good feel for the whole world of wonderful instruments out there. It's like we have the kind of variety that existed on concert hall stages in the 1930s -but in the digital world.

For once, Pete, you're right -- by 25%. Because the new version has 3 extra mic positions that the old version doesn't have. So in a way, it is the old version running through a new engine, but in a way, it's not.
