Oh, it is getting spicier. LOL. Toontrack is going to release another grand piano for EZkeys 2 today. Then I guess VSL will have another Synchron Piano soon.

BTW, this is a 1951 instrument, as opossed to the 2021 unit used on the Modern D. So we have two options, an aged piano and a brand new one

Sounds really nice, although I'm getting more and more under the impression that Steinways aren't exactly my thing, I'm too used to the CFX which is my absolute favorite 😀 From that only demo to me it seems it's better than the German D. What's the consensus on Ivory 3 other features? Resonances, re-pedaling and half-pedaling? @David Lai , how do you compare Ivory 3 in terms of playability and pedaling to the Modern D?

Why does it sound so similar, if not the same, to the same piano on Ivory II engine? Granted, it’s using the same instrument that’s sampled. But I’m hoping they’ve made some improvements over the last iteration, instead of just porting what they have into the new engine. I’d be interested to discover what it has in store, and to have a nice playing partner to the Modern D in my system! Somehow I never really worked well with the German tone, give me the American on my ears!!!

David Lai American II has only one stereo mic position, the new American III has four. It appears to be that Synthogy usually sampled the same piano they had done before. German D II sampled the same Hamburg D like 2004 very first German D. Maybe the familiarity with these pianos give them the edge to improve the products.

i think that answers our question about the what gives the german d that synthetic quality
the engine or the piano itself (i think it's the engine)

Indeed.

I guess with Ivory, everyone expected it to be the American D (given their history). With VI Labs, it wasn't so much expected to be an American D, at least speaking for myself it wasn't.

I also think that I like the tone of the Yamaha CFX a bit more. Time for Yamaha to move up their game and sample the their new CFX in a higher tone quality for their upcoming generation of instruments.

Jose EB5AGV It's not there, but you can now add it to cart for a cross-grade price of $139 (or full download of$ 249, AKA the same price as Modern D) on the Synthogy WebShop… As a owner of the previous Ivory II edition, I can upgrade. But I want to hear more demos. Certainly music with all pedals down is no surprise here. But I want the short notes, the staccatos, the una corda samples, Too. I want to hear it before deciding whether or not to spend my money. We'll see when they release the product page online.

Tough competition.
