My Desert Island Piano VST - VI Labs Modern D

pianow

David Lai

well let me rephrase, i think about sympathetic and sustain resonance as two different things
the sympathetic is when you hold a key/chord and hit another one that's harmonically related to the first one and then they'll resonate with each other

but the sustain resonance is when you press the sustain pedal, all the strings will resonate with each other

the question is, in the original modern d, even with sustain pedal depressed, you could have added sympathetic resonances and they removed that? or they removed the actual sustain resonances when the sustain pedal is depressed? because the first one is kinda of bug and not true to any piano that I've ever played and I'm glad they removed it, but the second one is one of the very basic effects with a sustain pedal depressed
sorry that was confusing

Pete14

pianow btw i finally did it, finally pressed the ignore button on this clown so that i can talk to real people about what i love not to fake chatbots about what i hate

Interesting, because in reality you’re the clown, but I suppose you won’t respond to this because you’re “ignoring” me.

BTW, do you know that Sofia was very real to many ‘round here, yet it turns out that “the bot” was one of the few who saw “her” coming……oh, I forgot, you pressed the ignore button; which is code for “I live in a simplistic bubble; completely devoid of any nuance……”

Pete14

David Lai it’s odd to you, but not to me. And I have to say, your sentence “The first flaw is that it is sampled!” Though you meant it for fun, really speaks your heart out so well.

I’m not sure if you’re kidding here, because it makes no sense that you know I “meant it for fun,” yet still this really speaks my “heart out so well”……surely, you must be kidding……..

We constantly “bash” each other’s preferences (read CG’s opinions about Pianoteq), and this is part of what makes this place fun and different (we don’t take ourselves, and/or our gadgets too seriously), so, when Mac says that modeling “sucks to death” it doesn’t speak his “heart out so well,” but rather it speaks to his sense of humor, and, once again, something we tend to do ‘round here…….

David Lai

Pete14 Well, I never really took upon Sofia anyway. I just wasn't discussing. When I heard the demos, I knew it was PianoTeq. But I didn't say anything in those threads, as I wasn't interested in what they were discussing. All I'm saying was, Sofia wasn't real to me, I was able to notice resampled PianoTeq the moment I heard the demos.

David Lai

Pete14 Maybe it is I who's taking things seriously, then? I personally really hold my preferences in high regard for myself. And I imagine my preferences are very commonplace -- I can quickly tell if that piano was modeled or sampled, and as far as I'm concerned, the sound of PianoTeq really is bad, and it's been like this for years.

dickiefunk

I’ve been listening to the demos of this library and it does indeed sound wonderful!

I’ve been looking to get something that’s a step up from Pianoteq Pro (+ all addons) and NI Noire. Up to this point I’ve been considering the Garritan CFX and Ivory 3 but this one possibly sounds another step up from those.

Can anyone comment on the self noise when using multiple mics? NI Noire has the lowest noise floor of any piano library that I’ve tried but doesn’t offer additional mic perspectives and Pianoteq is naturally noise free being a modelled product!

I’ve tried the VSL pianos and those all had quite a high noise floor when holding soft piano chords!

David Lai

pianow That was confusing, sorry!

What I meant was that as of now, sympathetic resonances will sound when the pedal is not pressed and you're only sustaining a few keys. But they won't sound when the susdain pedal is pressed. That's why when you lift the sustain pedal while still holding down the key, there will be no sympathetic resonance. And that was the bug. If they added the SR even when pedal is pressed, they are afraid it might cause CPU problems, so they took it away.

Does that make sense now? Hopefully.

David Lai

dickiefunk I've played with 2 mics and the noise wasn't very loud. I haven't tried 3 mics because my CPU would glitch when playing busy passages. I would recommend it.

dickiefunk

David Lai

How would you compare the noise floor and cpu useage to the Garritan CFX, Ivory 3 and VSL pianos?

What cpu are you using? I wouldn’t expect cpu glitches when using three mic perspectives!? I had this issue with Embertones Walker Concert D and it stopped me from using it in the end. I don’t want a repeat of this with the Modern D library!

Perhaps I should’ve mentioned that Pianow is a bit on the slow side (you know what I’m saying?), so you might need to dumb-it down for him, and forget about metaphors, figure of speech, and/or similes, for these go right over his simple head; so, if you say, “the pot calling the kettle black,” he would ask, “but why would the pot call the kettle black?”

Surely, I will get a beating from him after this, but then again, he’s ignoring me, so I assume he’ll never read this. 😆

He's OK, Pete. English is both mine and his second language, so I guess both of us may have problems understanding sometimes. And that's all I wish to say about it. I don't need to "dumb it down" for him.

dickiefunk Processor 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1185G7 @ 3.00GHz 1.80 GHz

It's at least 3 years old, so I don't know. But I've had glitches doing 3 microphones, plus reverb and EQ. But 2 microphones is great. Well, I also have polyphonies all setting to max, so there's that.

pianow

David Lai

oh i get it now, thanks, so thankfully the sympathetic and sustain resonances are still there

Pete14

I’m right here, Pianow, why are you ignoring me? 😁

David Lai

pianow Yes, just the time when one is triggered is different.

Pete14

David Lai

This seems like a “decent” performance to computing-resources ratio, and yes, the fact that they kept it at 18GB is also a good thing…..

David Lai

Pete14 I agree. Lossless FLAC compression, open source and saves on space.

pianow

David Lai

i appreciate your time buddy, it's nice to meet actual living decent people😄

pianow

dickiefunk How would you compare the noise floor and cpu useage to the Garritan CFX, Ivory 3 and VSL pianos?

cpu wise, the ivory is just so heavy on most machines, with vsl if you use less mics it'll be quite reasonable, but the garritan is very nice in that regard.

about the noise floor, the garritan is the worst here, there's always some hissing in the samples especially in the lower velocities, older vsl pianos have some background noise although they're not quite extreme like garittan but 3 bosendorfers and 2 Faziolis from vsl have next to no noise floor, the ivory is decent enough i never noticed a thing with it
