VSL is Upping Their Game

David B

David Lai Maybe I should get the Synchron Steinway D back?

I do believe they are doing the 30 day demo license again.

CyberGene

Great news, thanks!

jdg78

That’s great news. I never understood why VSL instruments required such insane amounts of memory vs. other developers, but given the number of VSL pianos I have this will likely save me a ton of SSD space.

Jane

Interesting.
I deleted the F308 samples and re-downloaded and it installed the same 400GB through their slender pipe.
I'm on Windows. Wonder if that makes a difference? My Vienna Assistant is 1.1.410.

Did it work for any WIndows users?

Not that I care that much, as I've been pretty much exclusively using Ivory 3 the past few months.

David B

Jane My Vienna Assistant is 1.1.410.

Make sure you have the latest Synchron Piano software V878. This is what it looks like for the CFX download.

Also, check the contents folder for your samples because I noticed that it doesn't show the reduced size in Vienna Assistant, but when I actually checked the size of the the F308 folder on my main drive, it was significantly reduced.

God Bless,
David

pianow

wow, my beloved 280vc now only takes 50GBs, it's amazing, thanks for the promo code david

Mindbullets

This is awesome, thanks for sharing!

David B Thank for sharing. Downloaded the 1895 Bluthner. Loving it. I used to own an 1889 model (Pictured in my thumbnail).

What can I say. It's not Pianoteq, in a good way

David Lai I have been waiting for ages to get the VSL Steinway D… I wonder if the standard mics are good enough or I need the full library. Any hint on this?

pianow

as someone who have this instrument i must say the standard set works well but it changes the moment you listen to the full version (especially the 3 close mics mixed together)

the richness that tube mics provides, the bell like steinway quality that ribbons have, mixed with the crystal clear condensers on the hammers, it's in my opinion a day/night difference especially when you know how to mix several mics together.

BTW i love vsl steinway d274 (second favorite)

i think it's the most underrated vsl piano ever (because of its weird velocity mapping when it first launched - but they fixed it after a while)

It's the only VSL piano where I felt that the full library was a must. I couldn't make it work for me at all with 'just' the standard mics, but the additional close positions made all the difference. I haven't felt that way with any of the other Synchron pianos.

Jose EB5AGV

@pianow and @CraigNZ You are the culprits of my VISA card just burning !!! 😉

Jose EB5AGV

I have done some preliminary checks on my PC, not too extensive yet, but it seems the compressed samples increase about 10% the computing power needed to play lots of sustained notes (I have compared one of my old VSL downloads to the new one, using a similar PLAYER preset)

Jane

David B Maybe I'm at the back of the bus, David. An apostate. Not worthy of early smallness 😦

My pianos app is v878 and as you can see, the new folder I downloaded yesterday totals 400GB.

The newsletter email I got from them this morning reads:

The updates to libraries with smaller footprints will be available in stages, like boarding a plane in groups, to prevent congestion. If you purchase a Synchron Piano now, you can immediately update your entire Synchron Pianos library content. Customers who’ve purchased a Synchron Piano in the previous months will follow. You will see in the Vienna Assistant when your update is available. Updates will overwrite your previous library content. You don’t have to update all Synchron Pianos at once.

Although it seems rather dumb that since I deleted and re-downloaded, they'd rather waste bandwidth by sending me the big files now because it isn't my turn yet for the small files. 🙄

Jose EB5AGV

Jane yes, in my case is the same. Even if I have just bought a new one. I think that will be fixed soon and everyone will receive the new, compressed versions in short time. Let's liberate those SSDs!!! 😅

one friendly advise : avoid vsl own presets, they sucks

always make your thing from the ground up, loading mics one by one and leveling, EQing and panning them individually would definitely help, THIS IS A SERIOUS WARNING, DO NOT USE THE PRESETS OR YOU WILL BE SELLING THE D-274 WITHIN A DAMN WEEK😂 (vsl sucks with presets, i never found a fawqing preset in synchron player that actually sounds good - it's all about how much room/reverb you get👎)

Jane Maybe I'm at the back of the bus, David.

Jane The newsletter email I got from them this morning reads:

Yeah, I'm sorry. They were not pleased that I jumped the gun with the advertisement. I didn't realize there was going to be a tiered system. I apologize for the inconvenience.

God Bless,
David

Jose EB5AGV

pianow yes, I owned already other VSL pianos (BI, 280VC, B Upright, F308) and never use presets to play them. In this case I used them just to fastly compare performance
