bawb Thanks danno858 , part number makes sense. It's too bad that Yamaha does not match up their guidebook illustrations with what actually appears to the customer. It's an invitation to error without any explicit differentiation between the two longer sequences of numbers.

FWIW, Yamaha does that with all products I have seen and owned.

I’d like to know more about their guidebook illustrations. Is it a real thing or is that just a loose way of referring to the manual? If it is a thing, what is it / where to get one? …. or does one first need to know the decode for Yamaha part number convention so as to order it …. the guidebook illustration part ?

The service manuals have detailed drawings, with every part number noted.

Here's a sheet Yamaha tucked in with the P-515 manual. The graphic illustration looks simple enough, but too bad the actual sticker on the piano has THREE numbers, not just one or two: 1)Model Number; 2) Part Number??; and 3) Serial Number. Part Number (if that's what it is) could be innocently taken to be the serial number.

To be fair, Yamaha does insert a clarifying footnote (in the top illustration only) that the serial number is a 4-digit alpha/5-digit numerical code. Making this identifying signal more prominent would reduce possible confusion.

Two things:

i recently registered a Yami DP using the procedure & illustration you provided above. I must admit, ive found various Yamaha documented procedures that do not work as the book/manual or illustration suggests BUT this registration procedure does; just plug in the “part number”. If its a (long) DP part #, it will be on a computer-printed label taped to the DP shipping box at least 2 places.
If you are trying to register an accessory part bought/shipped in a separate box apart from the DP, i suggest you not worry about registering an accessory.

I agree with @MacMacMac , registering mostly entitles you to be officially advertised/spammed by Yamaha. It makes sense that Yamaha does not care at all if their manual is woefully lacking when it comes to an owner trying to figure out how to enable & use a given DP feature/function, but it DOES make sense Yamaha cares if you have officially completed the registration procedure; it officially sanctions Yamaha’s path/endeavor to sell you more stuff. If you have a new Yami DP and subsequently purchased accessory, keep your sales receipt as this ultimately is what the manufacture deems as proof of purchase / warranty!

I’m not understanding the obsession with these numbers. The important number is 88. Those are in black and white, right on top of the piano. 🙂

Thanks @Drew-r for confirming these niggling disconnects between physical labels on instruments and graphic illustrations in guidebooks/sheets.

For all that, I had no trouble registering my new P-515 and the LP-1 on the Yamaha site. Once it was made clear to me about the serial number being a 4-alpha/5-number sequence of the digits, that solved it.

Although I understand the relaxed dismissal of the registration process as not much more than a hook to SPAM, I can also imagine a dispute scenario over whatever issue, x,y,z, and the big bullshitting bullies pointing to one's "obvious negligence" in failing to register their product as "yet another reason to reject supporting your claim".

I'd note too, that I stumbled across a Yamaha page where serial numbers actually had a functional purpose in identifying vintage acoustic instruments and their various provenances.

... is contrary to warranty law in the US. For over 40 years now warranties are not subject to any sort of product registration.

Registration is a legitimate hook to send marketing/spam material.
It's also sometimes used to collect customer demographic information.
But it in no way affects your warranty.

Aside from that particular hole, serial numbers looked to be quite useful to some folks researching the provenance of a particular product, that is, when Yamaha sees fit to publish this data.

I am one such person that once found some serial numbers useful, but this dates to a period that began in 93’, when much of the gear i supported was actually made in America; the serial number was maybe 7-10 characters - mostly numeric with one or two Alphas- and at a glance, i could determine when the given gear was manufactured - month & year, and lot number when relevant.

That was then. Things have changed, despite which there may be the occasional person in the present period who might like to find it useful to know the date something came off the factory line, possibly to compare with the subsequent date they purchased one AND the date it is delivered if/when the latter may lag the former by weeks …… or more.

In France, there is a legal (minimum) warranty (2 years). It is due by law, registration or not.

But some products has an extended warranty (5 years with some Yamaha). I guess, the product maker can define their own conditions to have a such warranted product, like registration.

Hi folks, sorry for a very basic question.

I am trying to connect the P-515 to Macbook using a usb cable, I'm playing through VSL CFX, now how do I route the audio back to P-515 internal headphone or speaker?

I don’t use any VST, including VSL, but with the Mac, you don’t need any driver installed to use the P-515, so it’s just a matter of finding the correct dialog selection inside the VSL player and choose the P-515 (it may show up under some other name like “digital keyboard” or some such), rather than the “Mac speakers” or headphones (ie the normal sound output of the Mac). You may also double-check the sound output page in the System Preferences Sound panel.

Hopefully, someone else using a VSL product can give you more detail as to where that is…

Also note that when playing a VST, you want to disable the sound generator of the piano so you don’t get a double sound when playing a key. You do that by diving into the Function menu on the piano, under the System/MIDI section and turn “Local Control” to off (page 100 of the manual).

Joining the 'club' here too. Small 'uncover' - home away from home - with obvious signs where my home away from home is. And like many people having heaps of interests - and lots of people have interest in electronics. I do too, among a heap of other interests. Music and piano playing is right up there in my own list of equal-favourite interests.

And already mentioned - some tears that Bank One is no longer …..

This person took one for the team. Deserves an award. Sorted a speaker/enclosure buzz grill vibration issue. I haven't got that problem, but some customers encountered it.

This person refers to it as flutter I think.
