Since I also brought the "woke" reference in that thread regarding the bans on PW, I will clarify that it is my belief that the Woke culture is the underlying cause for people being more and more sensitive about anything, going beyond what is sane (IMO) and focusing only on other people's negatives. Or, in other words, I believe the bans are caused by over-reporting which is (kind of) caused by the Woke. Or, in other other words, it's the reporters that are woke, not the mods. The mods are just acting because they see that people are "insulted" and they don't have enough time to read the fine details. And BTW, my idea for creating this forum is not to be a place for non-woke people, but to be a place where people can discuss even such heated topics and exchange opinions, of course without insults and rudeness. I have friends who are woke and yeah, we've had our highs and lows in our communication and shakings in our friendship but ultimately we learned to understand each other. BTW, to a certain degree I was woke long before it was "cool". I became a vegetarian for ethical reasons 20 years ago but never tried to preach it or make people feel bad. And years later vegans appeared and started pointing fingers and accusing you of things. Heck, they even think we vegetarians are worse than meat eaters, because we "pretend to love animals but in fact we still make them suffer” (e.g. cows, hens) 😀 That was so silly it made me hate vegans… That in itself is an embodiment of the entire woke culture as a whole, not just vegans. IMO people should realize that the stupidest thing to do when you want to change someone is to point fingers at him and act offended.

CyberGene I'm as "woke" as they come, but I don't think I ever reported anyone, except one time there was a rather disturbed rant against Chinese musicians. I don't think the mods took any action, even though it was pretty extreme stuff.

Well, generalizations are apparently wrong 😀 But I think as a general rule (yet another generalization) people who are Woke tend to “punish” people they consider “offenders” which is a knee-jerk response, rather than using more peaceful means or a reasonable discussion. If you confront them, they will justify that action by alleging that the peaceful way was attempted before and didn’t help (maybe with someone else). There are exceptions of course.

I think of "woke" as the condition of discarding traditional norms and accepting any new notion, rational or not, prudent or not, decent or not. So I therefore find it disturbing that people here are claiming to be woke. I find "woke" to be a terrible disease infecting modern minds.

The term “woke” is an American thing AFAIK. I personally use it (maybe incorrectly) about people who are overly sensitive about social causes such as LGBT rights, gender, race, ethnic minorities, etc. and would fiercely attack anyone who does not agree with them. It’s usually hard to debate because they don’t consider their point of view debatable. They consider it the only truth and thus it should be enforced.

Honestly, I think some people are just born to become fanatics about something, being it religion, pianos, social justice or anything else.

MacMacMac I reject many traditional norms, and my beliefs tend to align with current "woke" culture, but these beliefs are not new to me. My generation rejected the conservative Christian values of the country we grew up in. It took a while for the previous generation to become the minority, but the change happened a long time ago.

CyberGene It's probably different in different parts of the world. To me, it's generally meant as an insult, aimed at people who are offended by everything, but I "own it". 😀

CyberGene it's also taken off in the UK. Ben Elton wrote a book about it a couple of years ago: Identity Crisis (2019). Quite hilarious. That's actually how I discovered the word even existed.

It certainly didn't exist in 2014 when I was living in San Francisco and Portland (a probably woke stomping ground).

TomLC Colleges and high school in some US states have banned the use of pronouns. ‘Hi guys”. No no. Say “Hi people”.

There is a wonderful book by Andrew Doyle "Free Speech and why it matters". It dwells a lot into things like hate speech vs freedom of speech and identity policies. I couldn't believe the extend of the issue TBH.
