there's a solid theory that Plowing is what destroyed both the Roman and Egyptian empire. their agricultural practices rapidly depleted the land because they didn't have enough knowledge on soil mycology. even in moderna, we pretty much only took to no-plow seriously within the last 20 years.
for the romans/egyptians, their empire well outstripped their ability to feed it. the environment shifted under their feet, a few bad years, and it was over.
even today we're fighting monocultures which are bankrupting farmers and the environment.
