dore_m I'm still digesting this as there is alot of information here. A friend pointed me to it. In the very least, you can compare how different pianos sound using the same mics. http://soundmedia.jp/nuaudktua/
kawafanboi dore_m Did the author say which position or characteristic seems to be most preferred ? What traits are to be sought after in the result ? There isn't much explanation on the pages.
dore_m kawafanboi Did the author say which position or characteristic seems to be most preferred ? What traits are to be sought after in the result ? I don't see those points either. I see many benefits to their techniques yet also question why they did their experiment in that way. On first inspection: What sounds best is totally subjective. I also think the average guy won't even notice the difference. So a consensus vote would be helpful - I wonder if there is data somewhere? They set up in a performance hall, prepped the pianos well, and the used identical Omni mics in many minutely similar locations, but didn't put any mics inside the piano. Every mic they used picks up the room reverb, and omni's are even more sensitive to this. So the results are only applicable to that particular hall and cannot be used to judge a different location. I would think they should have used directional mics at differing locations, with distance as a factor. Maybe they wanted the same stereo image (so used a set distance).
