Converting my garage into a studio

I'm in the process of converting my attached garage into a music/exercise/study room. HAVC guys are here installing the heating/cooling unit (mini spilt).

Here is where my N1X will be placed.

The top part is at another location (where there is heat), but I hope to have it here within two weeks. I have to wait until I get the floor coated before I move it/assemble it. That way I only have to move it once. I'm going with a Polyurea coating and some throw rugs on the floor. I am going to get my P125 today and bring it here since it's very easy move when the floor guys come. So tonight I should be playing my P125 in a warm environment.

Sure is. Used to be in my basement and now it's in the garage. I have to move it when the floor guys come and then put it back. Not looking forward to that. 😓

Got the floor done today. Just have to wait for it to dry (24- 48hrs) before I can start moving stuff back in. Here are the before and after. It came out pretty good.

I hope to have my N1X in on Friday. 😎

Is that an epoxy coat? How thick, do you know?
And how much did you pay? (For a similar sized job here in PA I was quoted $3200.)

MacMacMac It's a polyurea coating. Color is Driftwood. Maybe a few mm thick. They grind the floor with diamond paddles to level it. I'm not sure how much material is removed. Cost was $3,400 (they had to repair large cracks.

I removed the step for the coating. I'll be putting it back.

BTW, that 9" step up from the garage is a doozy for me.

I built a wooden step using three stacked 2"x10" boards, painted and nailed one atop the other.

Now it's a pair of 4.5" steps up. Much easier for this old man's bad knees.

Played my N1X tonight for the first time in about 5 months. Yippee! 🥳

Everything is a total mess right now with cables all over the place. Hopefully, I'll have it squared away next week. I ordered a new rug from Amazon that I think will match the floor/room much better. I'm just really thankful right now to have this wonderful instrument back.

Dear David and/or CG,

Could one of you (or both) confirm if there’s only one speaker (left) firing downwards, or two (left/right)?

I’ve played the N1X, but never looked under there; however, at some point I saw a picture showing one speaker (left) firing downwards, and ever since I’ve wondered about this, and how this could be an issue with neighbors living downstairs; since the speaker is facing directly at them, and it is relatively close to the ground.

Pete14 when I get home I will check that for you. Off the top of my head, I think there’s a subwoofer opening on the left facing the floor. And there are maybe two speakers in the same box facing your knees but it’s behind a grill, so not sure exactly about their number and placement.

N1X has 6 speakers (30 watts each) (1) 16cm facing the floor on the lefthand side, (2) 13cm facing the front (rightside) and back (middle), and (3) 8cm facing up (top of piano)

theodorn May I ask, what model are the speakers, and do they work as you wish for your playing? All the best.

KRK Rokit 6 Gen 3. They work fine. I run my N1X through a mixer and mix the monitors with the onboard speakers as I wish.

MacMacMac I wonder, though, about the acoustics. You're mitigating the concrete floor with the rug.

I have several rugs on the floor and I've also bought some acoustic panels that I need to put up. The acoustics will be fine once I get everything in here. I'll post a followup of the completed project.

It's not air tight, but it's insulated and weather striped around the perimeter. I noticed an increase of ~ 20% in my Kilowatt usage per day after I started using the mini split for heat in the garage. So far it's manageable and I'm happy with everything.

And it would be interesting to know if this ‘opening’ is an actual speaker or just an ‘escapement port’.

I remember seeing what appeared to be two speaker grills on the back of the NU1/X (left/right), but it turned out to be ports for the sound ‘to escape’ (what I’m calling escapement port) and not actual speakers.

A garage is a wonderfully sized space for an office/studio/music room. You have all the space you could want.
Meanwhile I'm stuffed into a modest sized bedroom, around 10' x 12' or so.

I wonder, though, about the acoustics. You're mitigating the concrete floor with the rug.
But with no soft furnishings ... does the space suffer from echoes?
