Would somebody please clear up some terminology confusion ive had ever since i first read (on PW) years ago that most older DPs have a small piece of rubber underneath each key. This rubber is the go-between, between the / each key and the electronics that translates key presses into piano sounds, and is located under each key at the front of the action …. where above there are fingers pressing the tops of keys.
Part of the confusion for me is - where are these rubber contacts located? Further confusion is that many people refer to these pieces of rubber as sensors. If i reference the photo posted here by josh, i see depicted way up towards the back end of the action “triple sensors” . As such, without any distinction, one could/should easily infer that the backend of DP actions have 3 pieces of rubber “sensors” for each of the 88 keys. Is this true?
Occasionally, i see people talk somewhat loosely that “sensors” are used to determine velocity of key presses, but again, i often notice there is no distinction when people talk about “sensors” on DPs …. with the possible exception that sometimes people call out “ this DP has 2 sensors per key” or “that one has 3 per key and one or more might be an optical sensor”
