I have bought Spitfire Symphonic Orchestra. And compared it to previously rendered track. See : http://www.sinerj.org/~loyer/GeneralMIDI (at the end).

For 49€, it is very impressive.

I had to load one instance per track (while Kontakt or EWQL can load all instruments in a single instance) but it works well.

No timpani are played under C3… and my track has some lower notes. (According to Wikipedia, Timpani notes can be quite low : C2).

I don’t know if there is a way to store in the DAW project the articulations. If not, we may have to create one track per articulation ! Other orchestra suite propose some keys to switch between them, this prevent multiple tracks. (However, here, with a plain GM file, there are no specified articulations).

I think typically you use a template in the DAW with all articulations( one track per articulation), or sometimes libraries have a specific midi note number to switch between articulations.

But not totally sure.

You can create a midi track that records keyswitches, and use that track to control the articulations of the instrument track (and even send it to other tracks). I have the free BBC SO version (it is either 49 or free if you wait a couple of weeks after request) but I removed it from the hard drive, but there is something in my memory that tells me that it does not use keyswitches. If not, then you need to use separate tracks per articulation...
You can do the same thing to a general expression midi track. Even a sloppy and basic wheel modulation on the beat (or following the strings section) applied to all the tracks, incredibly increases the realism of the midi rendering...
