There’s a bit of combined historical/political elements in play here - how some things change over time while some things never change. Otherwise, you got the correct gist of this ; in other words, you are right about how some folks have been conditioned to understand their rights. In the not too distant past, the “why?” of it naturally had some politics/agenda behind it in the form of the familiar “heart-warming” ( some may say bleeding-heart ) fundraising which, ultimately, is about buying voters/voting blocks.

Today, many of the same kinds of politicking hold sway, but your grand daddy’s huddled masses have been revised - new models - into combined government & TV-educated ( which is to say high-octane low intelligence) ignoramuses - cultured ( scientifically colonized, in virtual petri dishes “class rooms” before being unleashed into the world) SJWs …. Woked ….. looking-to-be-offended-at-the-drop-of-a-hat wussys waiting to cancel or call everyone they dislike “worse than Hitler” …. boo-hoo 😥.
