So … I was happily surfing the clack and other things this morning ... and the power went out. Power came back in two seconds ... but the computer would not...

@MacMacMac Now you have a chance to help the world economic! Buy a new computer and make sure you install Winsows 11 !! And don't forget to add a powerful 3D graphics card. It is necessary to get rounded borders for the windows and to fry your next power supply as soon as possible (more help to the economic)!!!!

Windows 11 is an excuse to take even more control over your computer. It requires a trusted computer hardware module. Nope. Not happening.

My next computer is still years away, but when I buy it I'll run Windows 10 on it. Or if that won't work then maybe Linux.

But until then this old box will suit.

The shop called ... and it'll run about $200 to replace the PSU. Much cheaper than a new $1500 PC.

@MacMacMac I would not suggest a Linux OS... It would work for too many years without issues (how boring!). It would NOT send your data to MS servers. It would NOT change the location and placement of the UI elements (menu, icons, panels, etc.) at each new version. It would NOT force a restart of your PC because it HAS to install 2GB of updates even if you don't want to. It would NOT force you to change your hardware if you want to get the next OS update. No, no, NO! That's no good for world economic (and many other things)!!!!

After getting my first iphone & ipad 13 years ago, i was a happy user content to not download the latest software update simply because it was released, so …. a couple 3-4 years went by before i did the first go-round with this circerum … my first update …. and discovered Apple also has a knack for using such occasions as a reason for moving or removing some UI elements 😐 …. which reminds of the age-old brain tease - which came first, the chicken or the egg …. Gates or Jobs?

When you think about the value of money over time, $200 is not too bad of a repair bill …. we live in “inflationary times” when, for instance, penny candy costs a quarter and unless you are watching old, late-1800s era play-acting reruns, like Gunsmoke , where dirt-poor cowboys could easily eat & board themselves for days with a metal dollar in their pocket …… these days i challenge anyone to shop & find out if you can buy a / any roll of toilet paper of any quality in exchange for a paper $1

PS: i wager you that paper dollar that an old Sears catalog or NYC phonebook will provide better wiping mileage than will that that shabby 1$ paper FRN

Inflation hit us this year. Higher than at any time since around 1980.
But even before this year it was not possible to get anything of any kind fixed for under $100 labor.

I have got over the years some used PCs and have upgraded them, as my 200€ i5 4th gen I got in 2018 or 2019 (it was a 2014 unit) which now sports three displays (two 4k and one Full HD), 3.5TB SSD total, 16GB RAM a nice GTX 1650 graphics card (just to manage the monitors) and, since some weeks ago, an i7 4790 CPU.

Yes, from the original I keep now just mainboard and box 😬. Even the power supply was replaced with a quieter one. But it served some time just as I had bought it and as a base for my current music PC. So was a good investment 👍🏻

Sometimes I think if new generations are more happy with all these unnecessary changes in the UI while I hate them maybe just because I'm no longer a youngster... Anyway, I really hate when you change something that was there for years and always worked without problems. I hate changes when they are just for the sake of changing so that the sw company can say: "Don't you see? That's a new software!" but the reality is that they are selling more or less the same cr@p with a new dress.
And it's not rare that when you drastically change an UI you end up with a worse product than before. Consider the touch-UI of the latest Kawai CA and Novus series: so many troubles, bugs and shortcomings compared to the old versions with physical buttons and monochrome (no-touch) display they have been using for decades... The result: so many dissatisfied users and complaints on the forums.

Self-builder/assembler here as well.

Some 8--10 years ago I built two PCs, one for office duties (now my Modern U and C++ development machine), and one rather heavier machine for a high-end imaging workflow.

Both still run lovely (and absolutely silently!, thanks to BeQuiet! PSUs and fans) and are good for years to come. The absolute best and, considering their lifespan, cheapest PCs I have ever had.

BeQuiet psus are on my radar for quite some time: which models do you have? Are they that quiet? They are much less expensive than the true fanless Seasonic...

vagfilm Oops that is some time ago and the names/numbers are probably somewhere deep inside the PCs now.

I do remember buying three, of different power ratings as needed in the different machines, and they weren't from the cheapest/budget line. Maybe on really hot days, you hear a whisper, but on normal days and use, I don't hear anything, certainly at normal working distance from the PCs (tower cases which are right next to my desk on a stand).

The same goes for the fans. I use three 120mm Silent Wings 2 fans per case, together they move enough air so rpm per fan can stay low unless the wheather gets hot. All connected to automatic rpm controllers on the motherboards.

For the processor coolers I bought 90-degree angled ones from Noctua. I took off the included Noctua fans and installed Silent Wings 2's on the coolers as well. Also automatically regulated from the processor cooler header on the motherboard.

Wait -- wasn't this a Piano forum? 🤭

vagfilm Yes, works nicely. Had to make some "custom brackets" out of wire (nothing fancy) to cling the BeQuiet!s to the Noctua fin blocks but that went well and they're happy there.

They installed a new PSU and it was still dead. Fans running = yes. Boot = no.
They temporarily replaced the CPU with a spare cheapo Celeron just to see if it would boot, and it did.
So now I need a new CPU.
It never ends. 🙁

You might consider a surge-protecting UPS to go with a new cpu.
