I just read that he passed away. He was never close to me pianist, mainly because of his emotionless playing, cold as Himalaya in the winter.
Nevertheless, I hold a lot of respect to him, mainly for what he has done to classical music world and his reference recordings of Chopin Polonaises and Etudes, which throughout decased were unmatched as whole sets.

That’s so sad 😞 I love his Beethoven sonatas, they are my reference recordings (along with Kempff). His Chopin etudes are also excellent.

He was never one of my favourites, but I have returned many times to his recordings of Beethoven piano concerto's, and to his Chopin preludes, and I will continue to do so.

I am also not a Pollini fan (I don't think I was intrigued enough to buy any of his old recordings), although I agree with Johnstaf's that he was "one of the greatest of the great". Just like Brendel. Never a bad note came from those fingers.

Back in Milan, I listened to him live several times, and I think he was excellent. I also met him once socially, and he was actually a humorous guy. Riposa in pace Maurizio.

Total contradiction in what you wrote. Maybe had just seen 1 vid of him before, right? I can understand posting about his 'leaving us'. But you just needed to kick somebody that is already down a few times.
