My pianos *DEBUNKED*

CyberGene

QuasiUnaFantasia I guess that should be pretty easy for @Sofia_MZ , she certainly has some pictures from the actual pianos, the miking, etc. I wouldn't believe she doesn't have any pictures from where she makes those sampling sessions. Maybe a university profile of her with a real name, etc. I understand some people may want some privacy but when there's concern of a hoax, then privacy is unfortunately not the solution. Besides, I'm not sure if there's also legal implication in sampling a commercial product and offering samples for free. Modartt might not be very happy with that.

20 layers are really difficult to do by hand without an extreme amount of patience, especially with extra long samples. With 20, I'd either need a robot (which would be devilishly difficult to calibrate per piano), or an extreme amount of time to just play 25+ velocities, choose the correct ones, and order them by gain. Guess that could be done with software, but still, 20 layers at 15 seconds per sample takes around 4-6 hours of continuous recording. I was wondering how all of those samples could be recorded - it would take probably a 18-24 hour period, which is more than most homeowners would allow. And the part about having to deal with creaks and such in the environment - I spend 80% of my time editing that out. That amount of work always felt suspect to me - I just thought Sofia is crazier than me.

Indeed, it was a prank.

Since after this post I’ll be probably banned from this forum, I’d like to give you guys the low down.

I’m 16, not a girl, not Italian, certainly not British or Russian, and obviously not a psychology student.

I started out hacking Pianoteq Demo ‘cause I have no money to waste on a paid VSTs.

I expected the libraries would sound like crap, and was surprised they were actually pretty good.

I was curious what other people would say, and also bored.

Honestly, I didn’t expect this thing to snowball, and am surprised it took someone so long to figure it out.

I suppose I should have come clean earlier, but it was fun to read all these supposed experts pontificate about the timbre of this and that vintage instrument.

I had a few good chuckles creating the legend, but I’m glad it ended ‘cause it was truly starting to affect my schoolwork.

I hope you won’t hold a grudge.

Ethical issues aside, the pianos are neat, aren’t they?

“3 weeks in and VSL is still waiting in the wings.

Love your pianos.

Thanks for the updates.”

Quote from some guy “elsewhere.”

🤣

MacMacMac

That explains how "she" could turn out so many pianos in such a short time.

CyberGene Besides, I'm not sure if there's also legal implication in sampling a commercial product and offering samples for free. Modartt might not be very happy with that.

As I think I understand, it is against the terms - which is why I led a private group to test my re-sampling of Pianoteq layers. Even as I publish free libraries, I still own the rights to the recordings and they are not for distribution without my explicit consent. I'd think Modartt has similar conditions in their T&C's.

CyberGene

Sofia_MZ ndeed, it was a prank.

Since after this post I’ll be probably banned from this forum

Thanks for being honest. I don't see a reason to ban you on this forum, you've done nothing against the forum rules.

QuasiUnaFantasia

Okay, so by now this has only academic interest, but apparently the "Sofia Steinway D" was taken from the Pianoteq NY Steinway D. Here are the first few miliseconds of C1 from both instruments; the agreement is obviously too large to doubt:

No grudge from me as it seems a fairly harmless prank, and rather fun while it lasted.

These certainly didn't sound or play like any other free pianos I've ever tried, which is why I think they seemed so impressive at first.

But when you set the expectation bar artificially low, it's easy to be impressed.

Pete14

Sofia_MZ Since after this post I’ll be probably banned from this forum……

Quite the opposite; you, my friend, have earned a top position at PC for such an elaborate study in perceptions, misconceptions, and biased observations…..

You will go down in history as the “Italian Chick” who not only convinced many, but also managed to make a whole forum (or two, if we count the other place) fall in love with you!

I must admit, I did wonder what “Sofia” would look like with nothing but a G-string as she sampled all them pianos!🤣

Once again, you are a hero the likes of which not even “Sofia” could possibly fathom!

Pete14

“I've been using your Steinway. Thumbs up!”

Pete14

“Absolutely love the latest one! (Estonia 274 Concert Grand)”

CeDur

Pete14 Steinfart model BS, to be precise.

CyberGene

jdg78 But when you set the expectation bar artificially low, it's easy to be impressed.

Agree. I didn't even bother reading about these pianos, let alone downloading them when I learned they don't support re-pedaling and half-pedaling and are made by an amateur.

It would have been much different story if it was presented like: hey, I am a retired pro-sound engineer with 40 years of recording pianos. I sampled some pianos and offer them for free, what do you think?

I bet the responses would have been much different 😉

Pete14

“Sofia,” just when I was about to ask if you could keep it going for a little longer over at PW, someone got ahead of me, and revealed “it’s a hoax.”

Of course, they got the news from lurking ‘round here!

Pete14

CyberGene I bet the responses would have been much different 😉

I wonder, if “Sofia” had been “Roberto” instead, would “he” have gotten so much love ?💕

jdg78

Well, at least I can delete the files from my hard drive and get back several GB of storage as I already have Pianoteq. 😂

CyberGene

fishker it would be interesting if those accounts were also part of the hoax 🙂

CeDur

fishker

Hi Sofia, oh, my bad, I meant fishker - are you planning to take the site with samples down?
