I think you powerful sighted folks may be able to help me answer a question I have for many years.
The first movement of J. S. Bach's Italian Concerto, BWV 971 has, according to some scores, no tempo indication. But on some recordings and scores, I've heard the first movement listed as "allegro."
So, what's going on? We know that no real autograph survives for this work, the earliest published edition is from 1735 with many mistakes.
So, what's going on with this "Allegro?"
Context: I'm doing a presentation on this work this week, and I'd love to try answering this question, as this concern performance practice.
