That does sound quite amazing!!! But he has a very expensive setup, and I'm sure the same can be said for these speakers. Definitely these are passive speakers, and not really what I'm looking for. But they do sound good. 🙂

David Lai If I had to make a DIY project, I would copy that design😋. Listening to it from my headphones I thought "this is like listening to a cd".

MacMacMac Obviously you can't trust everything 100%. You can download uncompressed files. Usually he uses The Earthworks QTC30 omni condenser microphones, like here:

I prefer the condenser microphone recordings, it's like, in a way, hearing the speakers themselves.

Like Mac, it's hard for me to understand how you can tell what speakers sound like when you're hearing them through your own speakers. I don't see the relevance in how good the recordings or the quality of the audio files you download are. It's only going to sound as good as the speakers you're listening to the recordings through.

PS, when I was researching monitors I found recordings of monitors of no value. It wasn't until I had the monitors in my possession doing A/B comparisons that I could I actually tell what the speakers sounded like.

Different speakers, heard via microphones and other speakers, will sound different from one another. What the differences heard mean is up to the listener to evaluate, based on his/her experience with listening to speakers via other speakers.

QuasiUnaFantasia Exactly, the best way to judge them is in person. But comparing them using your headphones can be useful. Can you hear the difference between a cd quality and the miced speakers? It's very subtle. If you can't tell the difference between a cd and a recorded speaker, it's a good sign, it means the speakers recorded are very transparent. The closer it gets to cd quality the better it is. Anyway there is no substitution for listening to them in person.

Whilst I’m no longer the prettiest gal ‘round here, I’m still the sassiest, and I must agree with the notion that listening to speakers….through speakers is like eavesdropping through someone else’s ear, it just ain’t right!

Now, if the OP is bent on ‘how great’ these speakers are, then, good for him, but unless “we” get a pair of these shipped to us for further inspection, there is no way we can validate his claim, “they’re great, I say!”

Well, they are certainly nice looking. I would probably want to finish them off with some wood stain and a few coats of varnish, but that's just my personal taste.

I'm also not sure how much useful information one can glean about the sound from listening through a recorded video, especially if no other speaker is provided as a reference point. But the tracks do sound impressively clear and full for being recorded via playback, so it seems reasonable to assume they have an impressive degree of fidelity.

I would certainly want to hear them in real life before dropping 3K though.

Different speakers will suit different mics, preamps etc. The mic position that works with one speaker might not suit the other so much. If the mic positions are different (which they have to be unless each speaker driver layout and dimensions are identical) then you're not even comparing like with like to start with.

It's the same as recording an acoustic instrument. One mic will suit a particular classical guitar in one position and sound not-so-great in another. It doesn't make the guitar bad. Another mic will sound great in the same position. It doesn't make the guitar better. I'm assuming high quality recording gear.

I’ve noticed that, too, how the geniuses can figure out global warming, yet when it comes to driving a huge speaker with a tiny driver, their genius shows its limits, “it’s just too darn hard, solving that there conundrum.”

Something else that bothers me: the longer the battery life, the bigger the battery!

Imagine a world where a tiny-little battery can run an iPhone for a whole year sans a charge, but only imagine it, because that’s another conundrum baffling today’s so-called geniuses (real geniuses, not Apple-Store geniuses).
