Ivory III, Another look and "Aftershocks?"

Hi everyone!

So, after some back and forth with Synthogy, I've got them to address the buzzing issue. When I told them that the buzzing was caused through realtime rendering instead of offline, the programer fixed a couple of things and, by the latest update of the engine on Windows, the buzzing is gone! I can both play my American Concert D and the German D without any type of buzzing in the produced audio.

But it seems like my CPU power has gone a bit weaker after the update. Not only am I hearing slight cracks and pops when playing passages with dense notes, but the same can be heard on my Garritan CFX library. It used to be that the CFX was the most smooth library I've ever ran, but it even now starts to have little dropouts and the like. Could it be that there's some "aftershocks" caused by some CPU overload? I don't know.

But this new Ivory III update has somehow made me like the Ivory III experience, if only I had a better CPU / more powerful computer. I guess I'm beginning to see the end of days for this laptop, it's drawing near.

But for now, I can still run American Concert D and Ravenscroft without CPU problems. So better to continue using the device.

So much for now. I'm keeping the German D despite running into problems using it. Now all I need is either for the fans or keyboard to break down, or more software to have dropouts and crackles. Then I'll be on the market for a new powerful machine!

That's cool. You helped them to troubleshoot their product and make it better for everybody [whisper] except mac users who probably don't have these issues [/whisper]. 🙂

I think they released the mac version first a few months ago.

I don't have Synthogy installed but am thinking they have something running in the background that is causing your problems. You could check "Windows Task Manager" under the "startup tab" to see if there is something to disable, for example.

I would try to get Garritan CFX sorted. That may improve performance of the laptop overall, so worth the effort IMHO.

Your laptop is rather new and if it worked fine last week, the problem lies elsewhere. CPUs are not improving too much these days.

Very nice indeed. I think that they also fixed a bug that @OlivierW reported on Mac a few months ago, it's good to see they're trying to help their customers.

With the big day less than a month away now, Synthogy is on my very short list for piano VSTs, thanks to people like you and Olivier, who are willing to share their experiences with us.

I agree with you, NPlayer! So far nothing new or strange in the startup tab, all the apps I want to not start has been set to "disable" and they are not running. Since I'll be busy this weekend with my performance happening tomorrow, I'll continue this investigation post performance.

Did you get the conflicts between Ivory III & Garritan sorted?

One thing I just remembered from the PW forums. Some people saw conflicts if the Sforzando player and Garritan were both installed on the same laptop. I had that problem on my older Dell XPS laptops. Uninstalling the Sforzando player resolved the issue for me. YMMV

One interesting item is that the Aria Engine "version" in Garritan (see Info tab) seemed to update automatically when Sforzando was installed. Uninstalling Sforzando MIGHT revert to an older version but I can't recall 100% if that were the case (or if it matters).

The Sforzando site shows that the Aria Engine has not been updated since 12 June 2020 (version 1.967) and the Garritan site shows that the Aira player has not been updated since 28 October 2019 (version 1.959).

Yes and no. I find that when running Tarritan standalone, I have no clicks and pops, but running everything on Reaper, I'm not that lucky. Maybe it's because of this version of Reaper (7.02)? Also, at least now I can be content that the American Concert D still functions. So I'll just continue playing with that on Reaper.
