Piano touch on Pianoteq

Hello everybody,

I have a doubt about Pianoteq and would like to hear from those familiar with it.

When I press a key on my midi keyboard, what other parameters, beside pitch, duration, and loudness that is, come into play?

What I mean, does the touch or way I play a given key have an effect on the sound like on an acoustic piano, or those elements simply cannot be replicated?

I'd say that first look at the data input that pianoteq has. Midi note, velocity and which notes are on at the same time. Then pianoteq can issue a sound that includes pitch, volume, and brightness. The known combination of keys may trigger sympathetic resonance. I'm not sure there's anything else.

It doesn't respond to anything else, although you might be surprised at how much of your touch comes across on a digital piano. A lot of it has to do with timing of notes, but we don't necessarily perceive it that way.

You say that touch has an effect on tone production in an acoustic piano.
This makes me wonder what exactly you mean by "touch" ???

dore_m so would that be a difference when sampling a digital piano compared to an acoustic instrument, where touch as a distinct influence on the quality of the sound?

Johnstaf very true. My doubt was more focused on the mechanics that lead to the production of the sound, for my own testing purposes, but how we play certainly shows, expecially on modern digital pianos.

MacMacMac well, I'm just a beginner, but what I mean, for instance, is the way you slide the fingers in and out as you press or release a key, or all those tiny little details concert pianist are famous for. Does it make sense?

It's a myth. Once the keystick is pressed beyond the point of escapement there is no connection between it and the hammer.

The finger slide can be used to prepare the hand and fingers for what comes next. But it has no effect on the tone currently playing.

I see some professional pianists oscillate their finger on a key like they are creating vibrato on the string. I know they realize they are not and it is only ornamental. Since we oftentimes emulate what we see I've found myself doing that as well. However, I've noticed that it makes me feel more connected to the music I'm playing since I would be adding vibrato to that note if I were singing it.

PS This ornament is only done occasionally. Usually at the end of a phrase where a note is sustained.
